Arrgh She wants skates!!

So we've been taking the kids skating for the past 4 weeks now, or is it only three, seems longer!!?

Well girlthing has taken to it like a duck to water and is now wanting her own skates - were going to hang fire and buy them in Canada though and we want to get her hockey skates. I've had both before and have always preferred the hockey skates for comfort, etc.

Of course being a girl - and 5yrs old - she want's pink doesn't she!! So can you guys help? Does such a thing as pink (doesn't have to be purely pink, I think we'll get away with silver with a pink line on! or the like) exist in the hockey skate variety! The boy is easily pleased and just wants hockey skates like his Daddy so he'll be an easy fix!

Thanks so much if you can give me advice.

:D

I am sure I have seen spongebob skates and Dora skates so you must be able to get pink skates!

You could always get her some pink blade babies - my daughter has giraffe ones. http://www.skate-buys.com/blbablco.html

The word no springs to mind. I would be very reluctant to shell out my hards earned cash after just 3 weeks. Another fad will be along in a minute.

Buy pink laces - loads of them available - and just thread them through some second hand hockey skates.

I got second hand for my two - one for $20 and one for $25. That's done them well this new learning season - one pair will probably be fine again for next season - and might need to trade in and get new (second hand ones) for the other daughter.

Until one or other shows real potential or significant commitment, there'll be no new skates in this house - pink or otherwise :p

Skating is not a fad in Canada, the children even get taken to the rink by the school. Yes you can get pink skates, think I saw them in Canadian Tire. You can always buy used skates, they make sure they are fumigated before you buy them.

But they are not in Canada yet. At her age she could need the next size by the time she gets there. Just my view for what its worth.

DNS - I hear what you say. Were not buying her skates till we get to Canada and we'll get her properly fitted there.

PP - Dora's would be the puppies as they say!! Ssssssh don't tell her yet that they make them!!

Ann M - Yup, I think the pink laces may be a fab idea. Especially if I can get silver coloured skates for her. I may just be able to pass them off!! She wouldn't be too bothered with black ones I don't suppose but she's really made an effort skating and she'll have to do it at school as you say.

What started the pink thing was that Abby met a young girl at the rink who had the Glitter Girl skates (even though they are probably rubbish and we refuse to buy them for her) but I think if I can get a couple of "pink" accents it may just do the trick. Abby never asks for much she's really happy with a pen and paper most of the time.

However, we won't buy her skates here as like you say DNS she'll be out of them before we get there. We also feel she would be more professionally fitted for them in Canada.

Many thanks to all for your suggestions and advice

My daughter was three when she started skating. Because of her personality we bought her skates at "skate swaps" etc., until we were sure she was actually to enjoy skating. Well, two years later and she is just like a pro, she is on a peewee girls hockey team and loving every minute of it.

The suggestion to buy second hand skates was a good one until you know that she is interested in skating. Im sure that when she sees that her friends and any siblings are skating she will enjoy it to....

Good luck.

I always bought my granddaughter's skates and I never bought new. I believe she wanted white girl's skates the first year, but after that - no way - all the girls wore hockey skates. The secondhand skate shop here has thousands of pairs of what look like brand new white figure skates. Kids got them - wore them a couple of times - now the store can't get rid of them. You pay more to trade in figure skates on hockey skates because nobody wants the white ones any more.

I guess a girl who is taking figure skating would want white - but the girls that just go skating don't.

I wouldn't be buying brand new skates every year. I am sure every city has stores with thousands of pairs of almost new. Like someone said - get her pink laces!!

Spray paint.

Add a few stencils... racing stripes... glow in the dark glitter... happy, skatey feet.

MrsLauder99.... HWP is onto something! If you go to a shoe repair shop, they may carry shoe dye in a spray can. A few years ago I wanted to freshen up a pair of white shoes and discovered the dye in all sorts of different colours! The product name was Magix Shoe Spray.... they might have pink.

Hi there, we will buy 2nd hand skates initially, we just want her properly fitted for skates so we know her size. She's not good at saying this is sore or that is sore and I just don't feel sure. I know the worst thing to to is get skates that are too big. Especially Abby has very narrow feet and skinny ankles!!

The paint your own design is good idea. I'll definitely give it a go with 2nd hand ones and I know of some paint you can get which is ok for material/leather so I'd get that and so a flower design for her. FAB IDEA HWP! Thanks

Thanks all for your advice/help.

Hi - My son is a skater - he's 11 now and has skated since age 4. have you thought about looking on ebay - you can get a cheap pair there and as you wont be forking out alot of money it doesnt matter too much if she gets fed up - or grows out of them quickly. I have bought many good pairs off ebay ( when he first started) wish i still could his skates now cost me around £300 a pair with blades!!!! As for pink - there are 2 options - you will quite often see ' barbie' skates on ebay - they are pink but are double bladed so not the best option - In my opinion the best idea would be to get her white skates and buy Pink boot covers- loads of littlies where we skate use them - they change the colour to match the dress ( thank god I have a boy!) helps keep skates in good condition too - just a thought
