Anyone a Paramedic or Technician???
 

Hi there, I', new to the forum.

Myself and my other half are looking to move to either Ontario or BC. We are both EMT's in London and were wondering if anyone is an EMT or medic in Canada?

If so, would you be able to tell us the crossover to Canada, if our qualifications are accepted or what we have to do to retrain. And the most important question of all, What are the salarys for Medics and EMT's.

So I just read through some of the link that I gave you.
It appears that the process is substantially the same as we Physios go through!

ie get your credentials assessed for equivalancy ($$) and check out the provincial requirements for the provinces you are interested in, and try to get their regulatory bodies to accept your assessment of equivalency. Then challenge their own competency exam ($$) or complete training over any percieved gap areas ($$) and then challenge their exam ($$) and pay ($$) to register.

I hope the examples of salaries they cite are out-dated though, cos the pay doesn't look that good! (-$$). :eek:

If the places you want to work are actively seeking paramedics you may find they will ease the process as much as possible if they can, and you might even apply for permanent resident statust under a provincial nominee programme? (or were you thinking temporary work permit?)

We were looking for permanent residency. What is $40-50k in english money?? I take it that isn't a good wage then?

We are looking at Ontario or BC.

Well, if you are both earning it, it's OK.

It also depends on where in those provinces you end up, as property prices/cost of living in Toronto or Vancouver, for instance, as compared with smaller towns/more rural areas in either of those provinces may have a considerable impact on how far your salaries go.

Current X rate is ~2.3, but its been anywhere between about 2.0 and 2.5 in recentish memory, but really its irrelevant how many quid its worth (dont worry, common beginners error!), its what it can get you in Canada that matters.

In real terms if you both get 40-50k, then 80-100k is a comfortable enough living in most places, and I suppose overtime is available in addition to the base wage? Cost of living has been done to death here over time, suffice it to say actually owning and running a home in Canada is a lot more expensive than visiting and paying for a rental car and meals out would lead you to believe.

In Canadian terms $40 -50 k is not the worst wage going, statscanada can provide all sorts of info on average and median incomes. Average household income in Ontario is somewhere in the 60 or 70k range now I believe, but that could mean two or three wages combined.

BC or Ontario? Any reason for those choices? they are really like chalk and cheese in so many ways. Have you visited either?

Ontario does not have a "provincial nomination" option at present by the way

Umm..... not so good money then..

We chose those areas as I have sort of looked at areas and BC is closet to English climate. The provinces in the middle I am lead to believe are more prairie land. Ontario looks the next best province.

Correct me if I am wrong. All the advice I can get the better please.

Closest to English climate as in "I actually like rain and grey skies"?

This year (unusually) BC has been on the receiving end of some really bad winter storms, and Ontario has had no real winter to speak of. Dont dismiss Alberta by any means, it has a booming economy :) (and house prices:( ) and the mountains on its Western doorstep, plus warm chinook winds to compensate for the colder winter.

There is something to be said for all the provinces really. Except Quebec;)

Alberta is NOT all prairie land (its just full of Rednecks\Cowboys\Brits and White Trash with money).

Correction: Alberta is not ALL prairie land! We live in Calgary, AB too :)

Hi Kate, Just thought I'd call in on your thread, I'm a technician further North and am looking to move to BC possibly AB. I've looked at the BC paramedics site and it seems a similar set up to the UK although the folk have to pay for the services. I would have good look at the web site to see how your qualifications will transfer. I also think the pay is not as good as the UK but you (and me ) need to decide if the drop is worth it. Hope all goes well

There was a guy on UK TV a few years back on that 'Get a New Life' type programme who was a paramedic in the UK and moved to Calgary to work in private paramedic services for the oil industry - perhaps this would be a more lucrative paramedic-type career???

I remember that 'Get a New Life' episode - he managed to change the direction of his career based on some specialist training he had received I think - think it was on 'decontamination' or CBRN or bit of both - could you guys modify your resume to include anything a little unusual if necessary ?
