This site will tell you what size tires you will need to put on 16" wheels to ensure that your speedo still shows the correct speed. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

In essence, the tires you will need on 16" rims will be "deeper" than the ones you will require on 17" rims to take into account the loss of an inch.

thats the most important thing..

the speedo isnt much of an issue as they are all up to 10%out anyway.

and also you'd buy 16" tyres that keep the rolling radius virtually the same as before so the speedo's not an issue.

for example 185/65/17.... 185 is the width, 65 is the side wall % based on width. so if you dropped a size then you'd just buy a slightly larger side wall to make the difference up as a taller sidewall would keep the ratio the same.

but to be honest the price between 16" and 17" tyres isn't much anyway, and more cars have 17" wheels these days so the tyres will be easy to sell on if you dont need them any more

more important on any wheel you buy is the stud pattern, PCD and offset so they actually fit the car and don't catch on mechanical / body work.

most jap cars with 5 lugs are 114.3 stud pattern (cant rember the pcd size, its the big hole in the middle of the wheel)
but the offset is important as its how far the wheel is in or out from the suspension inner arch etc.... i won't try and explain as for most it won't matter for most people but basically the lower the offset the more the wheels will stick out rather than in.

but its not as simple as just buying a set of wheels and putting them on, i've seen the mistake made many times.

i've brought a set of winter tyres for the jeep that are wider than the summer tyres, but have a smaller sidewall, so the rolling raduis stays essentially the same
