I am a bit even though I'm glad it's over for another year.

Pfft...don't make me laugh.

I never could get 2 weeks off at Christmas and even if it was possible, I would have to take time from my holiday allocation, which I was never and will never be prepared to do.

I assume it would depend on the job... I agree with that, I wouldn't want to take leave from work unless the 2 weeks was being spent on a beach somewhere warm.

When working I would be happy with just having Christmas Day off...lol..

Tis the life of hotel and airline jobs, always working the holidays.

Yup.

My son just had Christmas Eve and Boxing Day off - for the first time in 6 years (the restaurant closes on Christmas Day itself). He actually got to enjoy Christmas for a change!

Most people take the 10 days or so, but 2 weeks would be rare. The majority of offices shut down for Christmas IME, or people can choose to use holiday but because of the weekends and bank holidays it usually means only taking 3 days for a 10 day stretch off work.

Both hubby and I finished on the 22nd and went back yesterday (although should have been the 3rd but we were away so took an extra day). Most people I know were off for the 10 days or so but as said above it does depend on the industry - it's not so easy if you're in a service industry or work shifts!

But to answer the original question, I'm very happy to be back, love getting my routine back again! Fab time off with the family but the children go back to school today so I'll be able to catch up with myself a bit.

At the hotels I always had to work unless it fell on my normal day off, hotels after all never close.

The airline at first I had to work, but after a couple years had seniority to have it off, and I did bid it off and would get it, but would then trade shifts with a lower seniority co-worker with a family/kids so they could have it off. So I wasn't forced to work, just thought it would be nice since I didn't have kids and could live with working it.

I used to have the option of working Xmas day or NYE and i was said Xmas day as i wanted to go out for NYE.

As I get older it is the other way round.

I always asked for Boxing Day off as well as its my mum's birthday

We - civil service - had the three public holidays plus one day.

Anything else taken came out of your annual leave or built up flexi-time.

People with families would try to take off the in between days if operational needs allowed.

Gotcha. Fair enough. Definitely wouldn't expect that here, pretty sure most of the guys at my co-op placement were back at work on business days.

In IT it would probably work similar to what you describe except someone would have to be on call in case there was a major issue. Depending on the organisation this could switch from person to person or could rotate year by year.

Here working at SDM I worked xmas eve, boxing day and nye. Only time I got paid extra was boxing day. We then get public holiday pay which ends up being around $20 for xmas day and new years day since we had a regular schedule in the weeks before the public holiday.

I had been preparing myself mentally for 2017 so I was quite excited about going back.
I'm in a "positive mental attitude" frame of mind. Working on achieving my goals and turning my life around!
