Re: Anyone feed raw diet for their dog?

After researching it and looking at both commercial raw foods and non-commercial ways, it's just too dang pricey. Would spend more on the dog to eat then us...lol... Also lack of availability of butcher/meat dept in grocery stores, and I don't think eating steak and pork chops and so on would be the best way either...

She shall stay on Acana mixed with one of the salmon based wet foods to make the kibble more appealing and keeps her coat shiny.

I did stop using commercial treats and give her sardines as a treat a few times a week, she prefers it, and is far more willing to do something when she knows she is getting something good, plus the natural fish oils are good for her skin and coat.

We feed both our dog and cat a raw diet, both love their raw food and we worked it out against the better end of kibble and it didn't work out much more.

The commercial raw diet the local store has was 3lbs for 46 dollars, and would last about 9 days using the feeding guidelines, where the 5lb bag of kibble is 23 dollars and lasts about 3 weeks roughly.

Granted we don't have competition here, so everything tends to be overpriced, I am sure it's cheaper in Vancouver stores...

Not sure how much it would cost to do it myself as I can't source the variety of meat needed, so unsure of the cost there.

Raw Dog Food, Raw Pet Food, Raw Cat Food Manufacturer | 3P Naturals and reddogbluekat.com are the two raw food brands we use. The price depends on which protein you get as well as how much you need to feed. We pay approxiametely $60 a month for Felix's food. On top comes supplements and bones (bones only costing $1.60) and one bone is enough for two feedings.
3P has a great website and blog for info about feeding raw and how to change over. They also have a nutritionist whom you can e-mail and ask any questions about raw food and it's free of charge.

I don't know if its available in Canada but a 6 pound bag of Northwest Naturals sell for around $24 here.

We used to give our dogs raw chicken wings in the UK, thawed ones in the winter, frozen ones in the summer (but not straight out of the freezer at -18C of course!).

Wings are very cheap in the UK (usually $2-$3/kg), unlike over here!

I am leaning towards giving one of the commercial foods a try, the one I have easy access too in town is Red Dog Blue Cat, would run about 45 ish a month which is not bad if she has better health.

I'll have to see if 3P is sold anywhere locally or somewhere in North Van and buy a month at a time.

We have a holistic vet ( also practices traditional vet med when needed but doesn't push necessary stuff like some vets do.) and she supports raw diet whenever possible.

Do you notice better health overall with you dogs?

We also have a similar vet that uses holistic and western vet practices. We have found both our dog and cat have benefited from the change to a raw diet. They really enjoy meal time and there general well being, health and fur seems to have benefited.

Re: Anyone feed raw diet for their dog?

She starts a raw diet tomorrow. Went with Red Dog Blue Kat as price wise it's not bad, and I like the fact it's made in North Vancouver, and it's readily available at Bosley's so we don't have to go into Vancouver for it.

Cost is about 1.00 per day which is not much more then what the Acana kibble costs.

With the proteins we will use total monthly cost is roughly $30 vs 27.99 for the bag of kibble.

We introduced her to raw bones a couple weeks ago as a treat to test the raw waters and she flips out for them, so I think she will enjoy raw diet far more then kibble.

I figure we don't eat over processed foods day in and day out our entire lives, so why should the dog?

We find the raw bones are good for cleaning their teeth, which as you may know doxies do have teeth issues and so saves on vet bills. It's also a treat for them and breaks up the routine. We usually get a bag of turkey necks and some femurs.

Yes indeed. Keeping her teeth healthy is a high priority, I do brush her teeth currently but she fights me to no end so not sure how effective it is, but she lives the bones, so I think they will do more then I can with a brush...lol
