My upcoming UK - Canada flight has a 1hr 30min connection - is this currently possible?

If you can change your flights to go via another airport like Montreal, or better - a US airport, that would be better. YYZ was a mess on May 1 due to ground crew staff shortages my flight was delayed by 3 hours on the ground causing me to misconnect, same deal on the return, the inbound flight from YYZ-AMS was delayed, so my flight home was also delayed, albeit by less time.

On return we had the dreaded "CBSA are too backlogged so you can't get off the plane yet" which caused another 30min delay.

Then our luggage didn't arrive. All told on my way from Toronto to Malta I was delayed 8 hours to my final destination, and about 3 hours delay on the return trip.

As summer rush travel picks up and Canada as usual ends up on its arse and unprepared I will be flying out of US airports this summer if I can.

I. for my sins, have to see Saskatchewan. Flying from Buffalo is going to take via Chicago or Atlanta and via Calgary. Still, it's less hassle than going to Toronto.

I believe you 100%. It's a sad state when to get somewhere within the same country it's better to fly via a third country.

I have travel for work next month. I'm going outbound via YYZ as hopefully connecting domestic to international wont be too much of a sh1tshow & I have a 3hr+ layoever anyway. Returning I'm coming via Halifax. Hopefully smaller airport, fewer international flights means less chance of delays. We'll see....

OK so we did the trip and missed the connection!
Thing is it wasn't an airport issue. Both Manchester and Toronto airports were fine. The only reason we missed the connection was due to our Air Canada flight leaving Manchester 1 hour late due to some technical issue. Thing is despite this the pilot made up time and we arrived only 25 minutes late meanwhile our flight to Winnipeg was delayed by 30 minutes so we could of made it except on landing we found that Air Canada had allready rebooked us onto a later flight. Up shot we arrived in Winnipeg 2.5 hrs late so all in all not bad.

Glad you made it ok!

In your case if you made it to the gate of the original flight, you would have still been allowed on, even though they already rebooked you.

At least that's what I was told in FRA when I missed my connecting flight - the one they put me on was an 8hr delay from my original arrival, so I tried to run to the gate to catch the flight, but I got amassed in FRA's unpredictable transfer security and missed it probably by 5 mins.

I think ti doesn't make a difference on whether you're arriving at YYZ from a US airport or from a European airport, what all these issues, long queues and lost luggage is concerned, right?

The only option I see is flying to Buffalo and taking the bus to Toronto, or entering Canada via another airport like Montreal, or Ottawa or Halifax, if possible.

That "Arrive Canada idiocy" also doesn't seem to go away, and seems a persistent political thing. The UK doesn't operate something similar, nor does the EU. Politicians should rather be concerned when everyone gets the 4th vaccine later on this year, than travel bureaucracy.

Yes that's what I was suggesting in the post you quoted - driving either to BUF or DTW and flying from a US airport, completely bypassing all the Canadian covid protocols when it comes to air travel.

Also want to avoid big European airports like Schiphol as they are experiencing delays too.

Ideal routing for me is [DTW/BUF] - [IAD/JFK] - IST - MLA to bypass the bottlenecking at Canadian and EU airports if I go back this summer.

There is a bus service from BUF to Toronto but it's irregular, regarding the days on when it runs. Other than that that's an option.
Regarding driving, and renting a car, that might be difficult as well, I've heard of shortages of rental cars across the sector, but not certain, if Canada is affected or not.

Regarding Schiphol airport, yes I've heard about issues there as well, however not certain, if this also affects transiting passengers. In the end you're checked through if travelling from (in your case Malta? ) to Canada, then security and checking luggage won't be an issue. However passport and papers will most likely be checked there as you're leaving the Schengen zone?

Besides these ridiculous queues at YYZ and all the other mayhem there, I'd also avoid YYZ for the sole reason of risk of losing the luggage. I've seen pictures of endless bags at arrival hall in YYZ.

I also think that the Canadian government needs to have a totally different attitude, if Canada is to retain an image of a welcoming country. Certainly not in line with liberal values, if they have any values at all. ( but one can say that about many politicians these days...)

Yes Pearson lost my luggage last month.. Re: Schiphol my worry would be

1) Those delays, even if you aren't affected as a connecting passenger, could cause flight delays to your connecting flight or your first flight, as happened to me
2) Inbound flight from Canada being delayed as a result of YYZ issues and thus the return flight from Schiphol being delayed.


Yeah renting a car across the border can be tricky in the best of times, and most companies aren't even allowing it with the shortage. For Buffalo your best bet may be to take an Uber to the Rainbow bridge (walkable), walk across the border then hop in another Uber/Taxi/friend's car on the Canadian side. I was just going to drive my own vehicle down and park it at the airport.

First step at getting back to normal re: travel has been done - vaccine mandates are gone as of 20th June. Next we need arrivecan and arrival covid checks to go. Then eventually, the mask mandate.

I vote for walking across the bridge. We tried to rent a car in the US to drive across the border and leave in Canada, we couldn’t find a company that would do this. Maybe we didn’t look hard enough.
