I understand your discretion. You don't mess with the Moncton mafia or they'll bludgeon you to death with tightly rolled up supermarket flyers after torturing you with a thousand paper cuts from coupons.

One of the joys of being a mod is I can read it. I agree with you.

Also, I dont like the inference that anyone would be bullied into removing a post, or not posting in the first place. (Unless I am doing the bullying of course....) Seriously, if you go to the trouble to post what you think of a place, and do so in a manner that is within the rules here, why then delete it?

Different opinions on places is what gives this site its strength, its real information from real people who have really lived there. PMing dilutes that strength, the information is lost to others.

Anyway, the advice to the OP is to ensure you visit NB and do all of the typical recce things (houses, schools, shopping, job hunting, etc.) as it may not be as perfect as it appears to be from all of the positive comments on BE ;)

Is this a BE in some alternate universe? Perhaps I missed these posts and their responses.

I too have posted several negative things about Moncton/NB and never had anyone picking me up on it. But when I say nice things about the place, that's when all the sarcasm, antagonising and piss taking comes out.

I can think of about a dozen with direct experience of living/working in the greater Moncton area which I think is quite a good representation for a place this size. Unfortunately they don't post that regularly, but when they do, like me, they recognise the cons but consider the pros outnumber them.

An old thread with a few on. and a newer one.

Sadly, whenever the subject of this part of Canada comes up there's a lot of silly stuff posted from people with no direct experience of living in the area.

I've just been going back over some old threads. Two posters moved away from Moncton/Riverview/Dieppe, seemingly for work reasons while everyone else who settled seems happy enough. One admittedly really didn't like Moncton but seemed happy enough in Riverview.

Its all a matter of perspective I would guess. Jumping all over anothers opinion whether it be broadly positive or negative of a place never helps to present your own views in the best light, it just seems to end up polarising people.

Present your opinion, let others present theirs and let the reader decide where the truth lies... and if anyone gets pissy about it report the post and let the fun sponges deal with it. Of course if people are posting "facts" that are not true, then by all means correct the record, but opinions are going to vary.

Agreed. However I was wondering about cxx's comment about posting negative things about Moncton / NB and getting criticised for daring to do so and expecting abuse.

My comment about an alternate BE universe was specifically on that.

I know I'm opening the door to some comments about being obsessive, but cxx isn't a compulsive poster like some and there aren't that many comments to look at. So I'm looking.

In response to a comment about Mozzies being terrible in NB, someone (one person) said Personally the four-engined Mosquito's out west (Fort Wainwright) seemed to be much more vicious.

In response to

There are 3 main areas - Moncton itself (older houses near the centre plus lots of new estates with big detached houses on small lots for reasonable prices), Riverview (lots of new houses being built, seems to get the best feedback on BE and friendly people), and Dieppe (mostly French speakers, very unfriendly, expensive houses).

Would prefer Durham any day..............
Someone asked "Have you been to Durham?" Nobody else responded.

In response to a director at their place of work having nothing but great things to say about Moncton, cxx responded with

He's hoping you'll never visit and find out the truth

Guess it depends where he's comparing it to - having lived in both Moncton and Halifax there are pros and cons to both. The best thing about Moncton is the morning commute - a joy compared to the horrors of the Halifax traffic jams.
Perhaps the humour was the reason that nobody came back with a criticism or abuse.

About people without family doctors, cxx said

Very true in Moncton - spoke to someone who manages the GP allocations and the waiting list is over 9000 people!! They didn't seem too concerned though
Nobody responded. I seem to have missed the post. Had I seen it I would probably have suggested they weren't concerned because the doctor patient ration in Moncton is among the best in Canada - as highlighted in that survey that seemed to get people's backs up a few weeks ago. ;)

cxx said

Personally it's my idea of hell - we live in a French speaking area near Moncton and find the people very unfriendly (and not just to us but to each other too!) plus the shopping options are dire, however they have coped incredibly well with the 3m+ of snow that's fallen so far this year.
One response to that was Shediac or Bouctouche????? would not surprise me

Someone else said "You must be living in the village of the damned. I have lived in Moncton/Riverview and now Fredericton and have never experienced that."

cxx said

Well French is the first language here, so yep 'village of the damned' pretty much describes it!! Have spoken to non-local Canadians in the area and they find it grim here too!!
There was no further response.

cxx said

It's the unfriendly people in NB I have a problem with - this is the first place we have ever lived where we have encountered utterly unfriendly people.
I said

Just out of curiosity, where in NB?
Been here nearly 6 years and we still can't get over chatty people saying hello and actually stopping on the sidewalk or cafe for a chat with strangers.
Nobody else responded.

In response to

whilst in here NB we try to speak to people in the street etc. and they just ignore us (and each other, so we don't think it's personal!!) - it's the first place we've lived where we haven't got to know our neighbours.
Someone said You're an outsider to Canadians always are and always will be. They are very private of their housing circle and circle of friends.

Once again

We also lived in New Brunswick and encountered the unfriendliest people ever.
I'm not sure what was meant by the response "I don't move in swinging circles & so can't advise, perhaps the sexual moires in New Brunswick aren't as free wheeling as those found in the open minded & liberated streets of Nova Scotia..." but it doesn't sound like criticism or abuse.

There were no other responses.

CXX hasn't actually made that many criticisms of Moncton or NB and has commented with humour and balance. Most of what's been said concerns unfriendliness of people in NB. One might expect that to raise a few hackles but the most disagreement expressed seems to be in Tangram's perfectly reasonable

You must be living in the village of the damned. I have lived in Moncton/Riverview and now Fredericton and have never experienced that.
So unless there was something deleted or off forum, there seems little justification for saying "I've posted some negative things about Moncton / NB in the past, in an attempt to provide some balance, and been criticised for daring to do so, so thought it probably wasn't worth the abuse I'd get."

Sorry CXX.:(

Love the Moncton Mafia comment, Novo.

And I still have time for 15 minutes on the flyers. :sneaky:

This was your original post. What else did you expect?

If you want useful information then ask an answerable question.

Budget?
What work do you do?
Family or Single?
Wants?
Needs?
Blah?

A concise question often brings concise answers :)

Or to put it another way: "Ask a stupid question. Get a stupid answer".;)
