Another bacon thread.....
 

We have just discovered (what I think is) the best, (most yummiest) bacon since arriving in Calgary. It is quite thick and reminds me of some delicious farmhouse bacon I once had at a B&B in Bath many years ago .....

We found it at the Bearspaw Farmers market, sold as English Bacon, and it is produced by Spraggs Meats, based at Rosemary, Alberta.

They visit all the local farmers with their free range pork products, and their locations and days are on the web-site.

I thought the Presidents Choice was quite nice, but no comparison to this. Also, this bacon is not frozen ... maybe that's another reason it tastes better?? :blink: :thumbup:

Winter Ale is usually pretty close to Worthingtons Creamflow which I used to have back in the UK. They've got some cracking beers on Granville Island.

So how much is a case of the usual Labatt/Molson hooch out there days?

18.50 for nasty Coors light type stuff to 21 / to 22.50 for some of the others mentioned..is the going rate in NB.

At two bucks for a large can....(and after 5 years in Germany) I would hope that these days I find myself allergic to German bier....

I am currently on my first visit to England in 3 years. So many things I was looking forward to eating, not least english bacon. It amazing how wonderful something becomes in your own mind when you can't get it any more and - I was very disappointed it was very salty and watery and it came from a farm shop in the local market! Not near as good as the peameal I now buy in Cambridge - I invested in a meat slicer a year ago and now looking forward to returning to Canada for my decent tasting bacon :thumbsup:

Have you tried PC's Wiltshire bacon ? ( Available in Zehrs and other Loblaws' affiliates ) I much prefer this to the peameal bacon which I used to buy, much less salt than other bacon I have tried.

In the store I use it is not with the other bacon, but in an aisle location, near but apart from the regular bacon.

I think you're spot on. We really missed gammon and pork pies. After about three years of salivating over the memories of them my dear MIL brought two pork pies and a couple of gammon steaks over with her (don't ask!).

We were most disappointed ... They were nothing like we remembered.

Likewise some friends have just returned from UK. They bolted straight to their local doner van and couldn't finish them .... They were so sad :rofl:, tried again later during the trip and same thing.

I'm guessing that it's a combination of taste buds changing and confused memories.

Enjoy your trip home. I'm going next year for son's wedding, first time in five years!

Lmao @ your MIL - Maybe they didn't enjoy the flight!! My daughter is a vegetarian and I tried hard to persuade her to bring me some bacon over but she wouldn't play - she does however bring me a rather sweaty piece of Lancashire cheese each trip :)
