Am I the only that thinks Canadian supermarket food is crap?

Today I went into Loblaws...they had yogurts with the best before date of 04 July. Like the US, I have noticed that new fresh foods are placed on shelves in front of the old food.
Also the electricity seemed to be off in the fridges containing bags of salad, veg etc. and the spray wasn’t working to keep the veg fresh. Usually when this happens they clear the shelves or at least put notices/tape up.

Don't eat anything that's in a box, packet or plastic container.

Our recycling facility recently stopped accepting type 1 plastics, which are the flimsy containers like clamshell packs and the tubs mushrooms are sold in, so your suggestion is a good one. If the packaging is something I'm going to reuse I don't feel bad about it, but there are some things I should be getting from a bulk place without the unnecessary wrapping.

What recent memory do you have of "food"? Do you think the truck from the local farm backs up to your Nando's every morning, or that they haze free range chickens in from the pasture for wing night at Earl's? Economics determines how a lot of people shop (including me) so I'm not going to a grocery boutique or getting my vegetables from the organic section. At least I'm not eating beef very often, and when I do it's usually burger. I'm helping save the planet just because beef is so expensive. I miss the time when I'd have a freezer full of venison to eat throughout the year.

At certain income levels food shopping becomes where can I get the most bang for my buck to fill my stomach, not which food is the healthiest.....

It means more veg and less meat really. It always has done. It still does.
It means eggs and bread. Or a tin of beans over a couple of nights. Or a large veg stew of all sorts + pulses. Legumes. Rice. Potatoes.
Believe me,. I know food on no money and I knew poverty levels.

I have to check but I think my wife is on a waiting list for one. But I can't say 100%, would need to check with her.

I know. I know. You can't do that in a flat ( apartment) .
I think the ones around you are more like allotments? You garden your own plot. Here the community gardens are community. You all pitch in together although there are also allotment places too.

Yes typically your own plot and what you grow is yours and you only take care of your plot.
I imagine there could be some that are communal.
Our apartment used to raffle plots on the common patio area but they didnt do that this year and removed them along with cutting down an apple and cherry tree. (Actual fruit cherry tree.)
I did try to grow tomatoes on our patio but we face north and no sun so they kind of just did nothing.

We have those here. Anyone can go along and help out in return for produce. We don't as we made a part of the garden here into a veg garden.

I am still looking into free ones (i have found lots that cost $$ but free seems to be more elusive.), but cooking today, I think the biggest issue is the very compact kitchen and low counters making it simply an unpleasant experience. I think a more suitable kitchen would make things more pleasent.
I just measured, the kitchen is 41" wide, 80" long, and counter/sink/stove is only 35" tall. The stove, sink is perfect level for me if I am sitting in a chair...lol

Slow cooker! You can make delicious meals, use cheaper cuts of meat, takes up next to no room on the counter and you don't have to stand and watch it. There's an endless number of recipes on the net, from soups and casseroles (especially yummy in winter) to desserts.
