It's very obvious out there on a daily basis. I think this guy has it right:

"It's clear from this research that most Alberta drivers could benefit from a regular review of the rules of the road to refresh their memories and knowledge," said Scott Wilson, a senior policy analyst with the AMA.

Why not have a refresher course every now and then, even if it's just an online course. I think it would help immensely.

And what about the people that come from other countries and can just exchange their license? How do they know the rules of the road in Canada?

Countries with reciprocal agreements with Alberta are Austria, Belgium, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, United Kingdom (not including Northern Ireland), United States.

It is still incumbent upon the person exchanging to familiarize themselves with the rules of the road in Alberta or Canada but no-one actually checks as far as I know.

You'd think she would have looked out the windscreen and seen the big green marshy swamp ahead. Or at least stopped before getting to the middle of it.

You can also turn left on a red light, from a one way street into another one way street.;)

While your on the subject of Alberta driving - we are going to Calgary in 2 weeks and i have been trying to read up on the driving laws etc. I know about Stopping for School Buses, turning right on a red light and yielding right of way at 4 way intersections but was wondering if there was anything else we need to know? I have never driven on the right before and am a little nervous, luckily we have someone (Thank you Getting There!!!!) meeting us at the airport to follow back to our accommodation so we don't get lost or crash!

So if you hear on the news about a crazy english lady driving on the wrong side of the road, chances are it's me!

Thanks

You got that wrong. In the City of Calgary, there is no such thing;):p

Driving in Calgary is a breeze, most of the drivers here don`t obey the rules. You will be fine:p

Never heard of that in lethbridge

I know that driving here is alot easier than the uk, even the 2hrs to calgary is a breeze, boring but not hard.
I would ask them to goto the uk and drive there, especially around Preston :(

Even though it appears that AC is being facetious he is in fact correct.

City of Calgary bylaw Number 26M96 states.

SCHOOL BUSES
38. (1) The operator of a vehicle bearing the sign “School Bus” shall not activate the alternately flashing red or yellow lights on the vehicle while loading or unloading passengers on a highway in the City except on those highways listed in Schedule “L” of this Bylaw.
(2) The requirement under the Act for the operator of a school bus to make a mandatory stop at a railway crossing not controlled by a traffic control signal shall not apply to such uncontrolled crossings within the corporate limits.
Schedule "L" is a PDF document located here. http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&source...UzMmJQ&cad=rja

Thus there is no requirement to stop for a school bus within most of the of the city limits. However if you do see one with flashing lights I'd stop if I were you as you're likely in an area covered by Schedule "L". ;)

Seems rather counter intuitive to the safety of school kids but that's the bylaw. On the other hand one very, very rarely hears of any accidents involving children around stopped school buses.

I would hope that is because people know that they should drive carefully around them rather than being forced into it by bylaws etc.

I thought that was fairly obvious and didn't need to be said.

However you are correct and given some of the drivers we've likely all seen at one time or another it may be inevitable that the bylaw may have to be changed.

Playground zones and school zones seem to getting ignored more and more these days.:frown:
