Accents, pronunciation, Canadianisms

Re: Accents, pronunciation, Canadianisms
Of course, living in Newfoundland accents, pronunciation and Newfoundlandism's (as opposed to iCanadiansms) are part and parcel of life. I find myself using Newfoundland colloquialisms quite frequently. Which does sound a bit odd in my perfect RP.
I do, however, commend to you "Newfie Word of the Day" available through the facebook page of the same name or via pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/pandora56/...ds-of-the-day/
(Newfie is a generally pejorative term I know and provokes great debate as to whether it is offensive of not. As with most things, it's the context that is important. Newfie word of the day comes from a Newfoundlander so it's probably ok)

A Newfie of my long acquaintance recently shared a video captioned "when you spot a gull doing a Newfie jig" which featured a seagull hopping around as if it was a bit stoned and the floor had caught fire. I averted my eyes from this blatant stereotyping.

A somewhat pejorative term that I learned from a guy who went on to be one of Canada's ambassadors.....

In my circle "Paddy" is offensive and racist. I know a few "Patricks" who are happy with "Pat".

I can see how that could be if it was said to someone from Ireland whose name is not Patrick but if my late grandfather had introduced himself as Paddy in such circles, how could that have been offensive or racist?

I have lived in Canada almost 11yrs and its not been until recently I have learned to speak "Tim Hortons talk". I still have a strong Scottish accent and trying to order a muffin or croissant with "butter" was always problematic! I would be met with funny looks and end up spelling out b-u-t-t-e-r or saying "little tub of butter" but again strange looks from the person behind counter but caught on to saying "butter on the side"! For this I never use the drive-thrus too much hassle.
