Big Pat was from Northern Ireland, throwing another complication in there.

Back in the late '60s and '70s, there was a sort of party game that we would play that was based on questions apparently asked by Canadian border officials of suspected American draft dodgers trying to pass as Canadians to get out of the US during the Vietnam war.

It consisted of asking them to pronounce certain words ..............

roof --- Americans tend to say "ruff"

Mary, merry, marry --- Americans say these all the same way, so do some Canadians.

Ferry, fairy --- as above

I had some friends who used to smuggle draft dodgers and deserters north across the border. They'd take someone fitting the general description of the person they were fetching and leave him in the states, and if things went bad and the guards wouldn't buy the "I didn't have my ID when I came down" line one of them would fake a grand mal seizure while the others ran for it. Pretty damned brave for a bunch of actors.

Someone wrote "diddo" and I thought it was an attempt at humour but no, she really did mean ditto.

Today I had a confused conversation involving "naughty" and "knotty" I'm still not sure which one was correct.
