350 or so registrations of the name since 1990, apparently it's pronounced Abcity and is Hawaiian in origin.

I thought that every consonant in Hawaiian had to be followed by a vowel, so abcde doesn't work

...and (according to Wikipedia, at least) the modern Hawaiian alphabet doesn't actually use B, C or D. Although it seems clear that the phenomenon arose in Hawaii, but amongst Anglo rather than indigenous residents.

I read the news story on the Southwest gate agent's mocking of the child. While of course that kind of public mockery is completely unacceptable from a customer service employee in any situation, I do find the righteous indignation of the parent a bit over the top. It was she who chose to give her child such an unusual name; she should probably have anticipated that it would get some, um, interesting feedback from people the child encounters. I wonder how many of the 300-odd kids named Abcde will change, or have changed, their names as they reach adulthood.
