12,000 bill oh my, reminder to get travel insurance even domestically
Lady visiting family out of province didn't get travel insurance, ended up needing emergency surgery and requiring an air ambulance, bill came in the mail for $12,000.
She was visiting Nova Scotia but resides in ON, out of province ambulance services are not typically provided free, and provinces may charge a hefty fee for those who do not reside in province.
So reminder even when travelling within Canada, might be wise to get basic travel insurance if you don't have other coverage to cover such events or might be faced with a hefty bill.

BC charges $80 for ground if a resident of BC with BC MSP coverage but out of province residents pay $848 for ground. (note the in the article there is a chart, the BC fee is not correct as it went up in April, they listed the old rate.) but air ambulance for non BC resides, not cheap. $ 4,394 per hour (helicopter) and $11 per statute mile (airplane).
