$89M? But I could do that...

I've liked de Kooning for that very reason. When I lived in DC I'd often pop into the modern bit of the National Gallery to have my lunch and check out any new exhibits. Nothing better than a sarnie and boobs to bring a little perspective to your work day.

Granted, Im an engineer, and will hapilly admit that much art just passes me by.
Could someone explain the ARTISTIC value of this?

I get that its a famous artist and all, and has "collectable" value on the grounds that hes dead and wont be knocking any more out, but unlike say "The scream" that also recently sold for silly money, I look at that and think "give me a roller and some orange paint and I could do something similar". Where's the unique talent in this, why is it considered special?
I wouldnt pay $890 for it, never mind $89Million

I've got a couple done by mine using marbles and poster paint that are dead ringers for Jackson Pollocks.

Aside from that, the Rothko and the Jackson are genius.

I like it - but only in the way you'd spend a couple hundred bucks for someting big to hang on a wall.

I think Rothkos need to be seen in person. I don't particularly like them but the tate (this was the ordinary one years ago) used to have a whole room of maroon on black types. I really didn't like them but they were very awe inspiring and they certainly conjured up reactions and feelings. It was quite a room when they were all put together.

I dont get it, other than they are genius for selling something my kid could do for serious money. Monet was genius, Turner was a Genius, DaVinci was a genius, even Klimt and Kandinksy. What is it that I am missing about Rothko and Jackson, other than them having a huge steely pair for trying it on and getting away with it!

I see your Hirst and I raise you an Emin.
I have a friend who's a modern art aficionado. I still think Rothko and Warhol are ass. That is all...

Many years ago I went, as a friend of a friend, to an Art degree show in London.
The friend's contribution consisted of a large 6 foot square black and white close-up photograph of her front bum, while another graduate's effort consisted of a scaffolding pole leaning against a wall.
