Default $89M? But I could do that...

Granted, Im an engineer, and will hapilly admit that much art just passes me by.

Could someone explain the ARTISTIC value of this?

I get that its a famous artist and all, and has "collectable" value on the grounds that hes dead and wont be knocking any more out, but unlike say "The scream" that also recently sold for silly money, I look at that and think "give me a roller and some orange paint and I could do something similar". Where's the unique talent in this, why is it considered special?

I wouldnt pay $890 for it, never mind $89Million

If the artist is dead then how do you know if it's the right way up?

Seriously though, can anyone explain the artistic merit of these? Someone must have seen something in it, mustn't they?

"High end art" isn't bought for it's artistic merits, it's a commodity, pure and simple. It's a finite supply of something felt to be in demand.

Art, like choosing to live in Moncton or Nova Scotia, is in the eye of the beholder

I've got a couple done by mine using marbles and poster paint that are dead ringers for Jackson Pollocks.

Obviously its the top one as there are more colours in it and slightly messier.
There again in the bottom one the artist is obviously demonstrating that the angles of the black swirls attract the light thereby releasing a plethora of shadows across the landscape, that is shown by the texture in the brushstrokes and the artist holding the brush at a 38 degree angle in their left hand. I think

For (Rothko) the canvases enacted a violent battle of opposites—vertical versus horizontal, hot color versus cold—invoking the existential conflicts of modernity.

I disagree. Art is art if the creator or performer says it is so.

Deciding whether or not it is good art is the privilege of the beholder.
