I am already in Malta where I own 2 cars. I want to sell both but am concerned that the new owner(s) could buy and not register in his/her own name and then I will still be liable for fines and or damage at a later date, when I will not be insured . If sold to a dealership, they will want to keep the ownership document unfilled, where the new owner signs to accept ownership. Any suggestions or experiences ? II have heard of a few bad ones.

Did your cars come from UK and you haven't paid the import tax/registered them to Maltese plates? Not sure what you mean by the ownership document. When you sell a car to a dealer they pay you the money and they are responsible for the car until they sell it to someone else.
Just list them on maltapark or FB marketplace and someone will buy. Cars are overvalued in Malta due to the rules around registration and tax.

Thanks for this. The cars were both bought in Malta, however we understood from some friends here that when you sell, you need to be careful as the transfer process is not always fool proof. I gather that in the past purchasers were sometimes lax about registering themselves as owners. Anyway, I had a look on the Transport Malta site and it seems that as of just a few years ago they introduced a new procedure to tighten things up and make the process more straightforward, which is good news. Hopefully the problem is now solved. Thank you for your input anyway!
