New ID cards

Finally arrived to live in Malta and my neighbours are saying there is new rules about ID cards and you need Euro 23,000 in the bank. Well my circumstances are I do not need to work as we both have pensions and finance so can someone please advise?

If you are British pensioners you will have no problem with residency, OAPs fare better as their health care is transferred, the department is very busy at present through changing all the id's and residence permits for new all in one e-residence certificate. see www.foreign.gov.mt click services tab then residence and economic self sufficient for your requirements, form j looks the one for you.

You can find the explanatory leaflets here,

If you are economically self-sufficient then you need either 14k euro if single or 23k married in the bank or proof of income of 85/93 euro. Says you need medical insurance but this is covered by a reciprocal agreement with the UK even if you don't meet the NI requirements but you have to set this up before getting the residency I think (there is a post on it somewhere on this site). It's a lot better than Spain where if you are not retired you have to do the NI contributions every month to get free health.

You don't need so much money to live here, what you do need is after three months stay as a tourist is to declare yourself resident by applying for residency by the suitable option to your situation, Self Sufficiency is merely an example of one of the options.
