Re: Malta
ok heres goes long post coming up!
myself and my wife went in late 2002 about 3 months after we had been to canada. this will be negative for a few reasons we both got gastric flu,it was a massive come down in terms of scenery, cleaniness, friendly people of canada.
bad pionts
we stayed in sliema (a mistake)
first impressions dirty lots of litter and dog mess
very english (m&s,dorothy perkins, etc)where were staying so wasnt really what we expected
area near to casino was like any uk town at the weekend lots of drunken yobs
hotel was next to building site (they did move to better room)
lots of bomb damage (hence lots of building work) and abandoned cars and furniture
good points
weather was very good for late in the year
had some nice food
seemed fairly safe
locals very friendly
cheap
sat in the jump seat in the cockpit for the landing into malta on a 737 which as fantastic view.
good for scuba diving (but its a breeding area for great white sharks something not many people Know and they have some huge ones caught over the years there)
would be a while before we went again if ever.

Re: Malta
I went on Vacation to Malta when I was about 14 and I have to say it was probably the best place I have visited. It all depends what you like really. It has the sun and sand of most of the Med but it has some really really good history if you like that kind of thing. It's a small Island which means you can easily travel around it and see all the different parts. The island has been possessed/occupied by all sorts of people from north african nations to modern military powers as it holds a key position in the med. You can visit anything from pre-historic temples to WW2 British naval fortifications and every town no matter how small has a giant chruch with some pretty impressive architecture. The main one in Valletta with the golden dome is pretty impressive. Also there is a cool citadel town that is deserted.
When we went we did all the tours via the tour company (thompson at the time) and they drove you around in an air conditioned coach without having to worry about getting lost etc.
All in all pretty good if you like history but probably not a party island.

Re: Malta
I've been in Valetta for 12 hours, back in 1985. I used to be a sailor on a tug boat. From those 12 hours, I spent 11 in bars and pubs......
