UK Passport Validity Period

My UK passport is due for renewal 2019. I am aware that I need 6 months validity on passport to enter other countries but anyone know if its necessary to have 6 months validity on passport to exit Malaysia ?

Not all countries will have that rule. The FCO Travel Advice pages will let you know which do.

I was flagged by the immigration officer at KL when departing for the UK, because she was concerned I was travelling from KL to the UK on an Irish passport which was due to expire within 3-months.
Her boss just said "Nah, it's fine.". As others have said, it's the entry that is the problem, not the exit. As long as the passport remains valid to travel.

If you renew at the 9 yrs 6 month mark or greater then you get the missing time added to the new passport. Just renewed one of mine and it came back in around 4 weeks

It's even better than that:
