IanBlakeley,
I have written to both AXA and AIG about this and explicitly asked whether their insurances will be valid or not.
I will post here whatever answer I get.

Here is part of the response from AXA:

''We would like to apologize for the Inaccurate information
Upon checking we will to inform you may apply for AXA SmartTraveller''

Which means that AXA accepts MM2H'ers as resident in Malaysia for travel insurance purposes.
Awaiting the response from AIG.....

Gunnar, did you think about a Malaysia credit card that includes free travel insurance (if you paid the flights with the credit card)? I did not look too deep in this yet, but I always read this in the benefits for preferred/premier/whatever customers.

Even if the annual fee is not too low, together with airport lounge access this could be a much better deal than buying a standalone travel insurance.

Which Malaysian bank offers a travel insurance with their credit card? I did a quick search at CIMB, but they don't seem to offer such a card.

I remember to have read this from OCBC and AmBank.

On the subject of checking the T&C carefully saw this makes you realise there can be hidden gotchas, the low value of cover for a serious illness and the need to pay very high bills up front indicated here.
