Is there an internet expert in the house?
 

We rented this place and there was a bit of the old "YES" wifi internet left. It seemed quite fast, but then throttled down when we'd reached out 8 (that's right, eight) GB per month limit. :rofl: . We did that in about 3 days. Topping up (no idea how to do it as we don't have the account) was RM 55 for 3.6GB... er hem.

So, I tried to reactivate the landline with TM. Wanted Unifi as we easily used 150+ GB a month in Canada. Oh dear, fibre is run in to Leisure Farm.... but not this particular road! I could kill the agent. Our line supports a whopping 1mbps.... isn't that dial up modem speed???

I went to a YES stall and he advised me our area wasn't covered by 4G / LTE even though I told him that a YES box was there already. Fed up with the knob head's attitude, I went to MAXIS and have just signed up for a year plan on 3G which allows 48 GB a month (provided 36 of them are used between 0200 and 0800!!). We have 7 days to take it back.

Now for the questions.... I just did speed-test and got 5.5mbps (in the same room as the modem). However, when I use my Singapore phone, which is connected to Maxis over here, I got a result of 14.5mbps.... but the phone says it's only getting 3G. How can that be?

Finally, should I just sign up for the lowest TM package (Streamyx) which although slow, is at least unlimited....

To be honest the whole internet thing is depressing as hell where I'm renting... anyone still looking to rent, make absolutely sure you see a bill or something to confirm internet speed!

When in Singapore I'm on the free 1 Mbps package from Star Hub, which gives me everything I want - surfing, youtube, watching stuff on BBC i Player etc etc all with no buffering.
It's unlimited as well and my missus can use her laptop at the same time as I'm using my PC and there's some youtube running on the TV again with no buffering and it's all wifi.

Actual Speed test download speed is 1.07 Mbps.
Funny thing is when I tell my mates in UK who are on 100Mbps services none of them believe me, or rather, want to believe me.

Note I'm using some of the 0200-0800 allowance!!:rofl:

We were using iTunes for renting films when we were in Canada, but at 4GB per HD movie we won't be doing that very often.... even if our connection can handle it!

I see your 1mbps is free over there.... it's RM 110 per month here, after we've put down RM 1,075 deposit!:eek:

Your best bet and value for money is still Streamyx and keep pestering the agent for Unifi. Be his worst nightmare and youd see things gradually moving.

It takes lots of patience though - not recommended if you have hypertension to deal with Malaysian... haha.

Not sure how the agent can get TM to lay cable in a particular street? Perhaps they hold more sway than I realise though?

How's your search for the internet provider coming along?
I faced the same dilemma last year when I moved to JB. Maxis was absolutely hopeless. But TM Unifi was the best to deal with! It was as simple as going online, looking for my address on their grid, and setting an appointment for the internet to get set-up...internet bliss was literally a few clicks away!

If I remember correctly you mentioned living in the LF/ Gelang Patah area in another post. So I tried to do the same thing I did last year on the website, but using LF as the address. Once you get on the TM Unifi home page, click on the tab called "Apply Now." It will lead you to a search engine where you type in an "address keyword," in your case, Leisure Farm. There's a whole list of streets (536 addresses to be exact) in LF that appears. Hopefully your street is listed. If it is, book it, Danno! If it's not, look for a street on the list that is nearest your street, and still apply online anyway. Wait for the customer service officer to call you to confirm, hmmm, better yet, call the number on the email that will be given to you, and tell them they could bloody well try to connect to your part of town! You never know, they may say yes! Malaysia boleh and all that! Good luck!

I really wanted Unifi, but TM say that the cables laid won't support it.... best is 1mbps. I could sign up in the hope they upgrade, but feel I'll be throwing away the deposit and 110 RM every month.
