Recycling and rubbish collection in KL
#1

Morning all, and a belated happy new year as this is my first post of 2012!
In London we have different kitchen bins for differently-recycled waste but I just wonder whether recycling is the norm yet in KL? If not I guess there's no point bringing all the bins when we move out next month! Sadly I'm not holding out much hope...
Can anyone let me know how waste collection works in KL - and specifically Bangsar if it's different in each local area...?
Thanks!

Hi, I did post a reply earlier but looks like being new here, I must have clicked something wrongly and it went missing
anyway, if you are planning to stay in a condo in Bangsar, some of them would have Recycling bins (large) in the common areas and made some arrangement with ALAM FLORA waste management people to come collect it at a schedule. Do ask your management office. So you will just need to do your pre-sorting in yar condo before you troop down.
If you plan on staying in a house instead, it's a different arrangement where ALAM FLORA recently had a NEW initiative where they provided GREEN bins to each household and had a weekly schedule of what days they would collect recyclables vs household waste. it's a new initiative mind you, so it may not be super efficient yet
otherwise, you can drop your recyclables off at some collection areas, eg when you go shopping, suggested are Bangsar Village Shopping Centre (there are bins at the Lower Ground floor below Village Grocer, in front of BBQ King and the basement parking doors). alternative is Midvalley shopping mall, zone A,P1 parking level.
Have a look at this (although mostly in Malay)
ALAM FLORA also has some community recycling centres that you can drop off yours to (http://www.alamflora.com.my/V3/ListO...lingCentre.htm)
Cheers

Ah great - thanks TehTarik! I thought maybe everyone was staying quiet because KL wasn't a recycling-oriented city yet! Good to hear there are options, and good point re asking condo management... I'm very unused to having a management committee or similar as I've not lived in a block before. Thanks!

Yeah, Malaysia is still new to recycling per we, but we do try. eg Saturdays in most malls are 'no plastic bag days' ie if you want to get one with your groceries, you have to pay for them, so bring your own fabric bags etc. I usually keep tons in my car and a rolled up one in my handbag. unfortunately some recycling campaigns are just blatantly ignored by the people, eg you will see tons of hawkers packing up their food in styrofoam takeaways that I consciously have to remind them to PLEASE put the food into my own tiffin carriers or tupperwares, and they still look at me like I'm odd

There are some really nice ceramic ones and even the old style ones have some great designs, almost to be used as talking points or whatever alongside Kamchengs in the living room.

they are still going strong in Penang. you see a fair few.
plastic bags in supermarkets now totally banned. bring own bags or get a cardboard box in the shop.
