Default Penang Furniture Shops

Hi

I prepared this list of furniture shops yesterday for a friend newly arrived in Penang, and thought some forumers might also find it useful.

Last week I noticed a sign advertising 'Antique' Cabinets, above a tatty/disused shop on the main road about 100 yards before you get to the Sunrise Building / junction to Gurney Drive. I think you need to call to view.

I'm always on the look out for IndoChine / Colonial style furniture. If you know any more shops/dealers in Penang please add to the list, thanks.

Just found the address for this one - it's 193 Argyll Road. It's a good place for good quality vintage Nyonya embroideries, antique chandeliers, porcelain collectables, vintage mother of pearl inlaid furniture etc. It might even be called "193 Dominic".

Oh what a pity the one in Abu Sitti Lane is closing in April? Or I'd have gone to ask if they'll buy my Chinese Rosewood dining table set and Queensize bed;-/
Thanks for list.

Yes shame it's closing down, but as far as I know Folk Arts Gallery only sell new furniture. I suggest you consider selling yours via the Spiral Synergy e-mail newsletter. It often lists furniture for sale (with photos) by expats, and is read by lots of expats in Penang.

If your stuff is vintage/antique you could try Auspicious Stars Enterprise, and/or ask them to recommend other dealers.

Good luck!

Thanks JC3. I'll look into Spiral Synergy when I get round to sorting.
When I type Auspicious Stars Enterprise I get Lucky Star Enterprise!

And if you cannot sell, Salvation Army will pick up and find a good home for them.

Here’s another modern contemporary furniture store I forgot to include:
Kome Furniture
6K, Jalan Siput Kepah, 10470 Tanjung Tokong, Penang (on the corner, fronting the Jalan Tanjung Tokong main road).
Style: Modernist, high quality furniture (and lighting), with emphasis on design, made from imported wood from Europe, America and SE Asia. Also custom-made furniture using local woods - nyatoh, merbau, batu, cengal emas etc.
Price: *****

Brilliant list.

Have to say I find Regent Home Concept, which is opposite Mekio and owned by the same guy, to be much better than Mekio. Nicer stuff and less cash, great staff too. If you going to Mekio then pop across the street to Regent and check that out too. They can even build furniture to your specification as they have a close relationship with a factory.

Next door there is a really great rug shop too.

Local Malaysian friends recommend Vipin Carpet, 107 Chulia Street, Penang for rugs, that they say is good value. I've not been there yet.

For high quality Persian carpets, silk rugs etc, Nasim Carpets at Straits Quay
Seri Tanjung, Tanjung Tokong looks to be a good place. Again I've not been in, but price probably **** / *****

I bought a simple sofa set (3+2+1 seater) with a modern style at a furniture shop called:

KSS Furniture Sdn Bhd
No 2, Tanjung Bungah Road
11200 Penang

The shop looks rather shabby with only a few examples of what they have. But don't let that hold you back: they showed me a catalogue with a much larger variety and low prices. The furniture was delivered some two weeks later.

Another furniture shop which I found when looking for a sofa set is called
KC Furniture
Jalan Tanjung Tokong, next to Korean Restaurant Myeongdong Dakgalbi
They have a lot of leather sofa's in a modern design, but a bit pricey (at least: for my budget)

Re leather sofas, does anyone have experience with them in the tropics and so can advise for or against due to the climate?
