Even if some individuals may not do so, the majority of people especially in the developing and Muslim world take religion and what they consider to be blasphemy quite seriously.

I'd certainly not raise it as a discussion point with any body I didn't know well but I'll answer truthfully when asked, the only time I've been asked officially as it were was when making a witness statement to the police, I expect that there's a box on the form so they fill it in.

The one place I visited for work when it seems to be a de rigueur enquiry was Lebanon, there they have I was told 20+ official religions, everyone seemed to be getting along then although the past was somewhat rocky.

Countries in the ME and North Africa were quite different earlier, I remember this from my travels there in 1964/65. But things have changed.
I believe that in general, the previously quite pragmatic (and multireligious) countries in the Muslim world have become much more conservative with persecutions and killings of religious and non-religious dissidents.

It depends of course also on with whom you share your information, an educated intellectual in the capital city is mostly more liberal.
My comments were meant to be more generally valid.

I reply truthfully that I was raised Catholic. That suffices.

Sometimes I like to wind up my Muslim friends that they are so liberal - Catholics believe in literal death before thee part - ie no divorce- whereas Muslims can and do divorce.
