Default New Expat in Kuala Lumpur

Hi,

My name is James and I have just arrived in KL. I am looking to meet other expats and would appreciate any help and tips on where to meet British people in KL.

Hope to hear from some of you soon,

James

Hi James,
British people are about just about wherever you go! Try the pubs perhaps!
How are settling in?

Hi James & welcome to Malaysia,

Unsure if you are a drinker but as Joamelie has said the pubs are a great place to meet ex-pat workers & there are many of both in KL, just google them (the pubs that is not the ex-pats )

I'm based in Penang & although the ex-pat community is not as large here as in KL I have still managed to make friends with quite a few ex-pats from not just the UK but all over the world.

Good Luck

Don't forget to also mix with the locals otherwise you might just have stayed in UK.

Hi James,
welcome to Malaysia. As said, lots of places to meet expats, esp in the pubs around Bangsar, Sri Hartamas, KL, etc. You should also check out the St Andrews Society, Royal Society of St George, St Davids Society and St Patricks Society of Selangor (many of these have lots of other nationalities too apart from the English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh). You should also subscribe to The Expat (free journal for expats) which will give you all the happenings around KL for expats. Website is www.expatkl.com
The Expat group has Meet Mix Mingle get together monthly. Check the journal or website.

Cheers

Hi again!

Don't worry, I have been socialising lots with the locals - I am doing an internship, and the majority of the office is Malaysian.

The pub idea sounds good. Are there any which are particularly popular with Expats? I know it sounds stupid, but do you just strike up a conversation! Sorry if this all sounds a bit ridiculous, but I am only 21 and this is my first time away from home!

James it is better to join one of the societies i mentioned and go from there as you will meet people who are also new to the country. As `I said the Expat has its monthly Meet Mix Mingle, a good place to start rather than blindly walk up to people in a bar.

Hi, 21 Bar is where I go a lot. I am told Ceylon Bar next door has lots of brits in too.

Hopefully you have been introduced to Changkat Bukit Bintang? There people are usually pretty friendly and its easy to just mingle.

I am 26 from UK too (north ;-)) If you fancy a beer let me know!

Agree with you there and it's easy enough to get chatting with people in pubs, both locals and expats. That's my opinion anyway.

That Mingle Thingy by the Expats, isn't that for mainly MM2Hers, Honeybee? And don't they charge for the privilege too

I'm about to turn 19, and this is the longest I've been away from my family as well. I'd love to meet up with new friends here since I feel like a complete stranger here. (:

Haha no worries, I have a Malaysian passport...even though I don't know the language...or the traditions or cultures here...hahaha, it's quite sad really. And the culture is sooo different than Mexico...it was a little shocking for me hahaha.

I've not been to Mexico but I can imagine it's a lot different to KL... just got the spicy food in common I guess. Ah well, I'm sure you'll get to make some new friends there. We're getting an increasing number of folks in KL posting on this forum, and I'm sure they'll be along soon. Enjoy your stay in Malaysia Have fun.
