No, I think you're probably correct in your general comparison. We are happy living in PD, but it wouldn't suit everyone.

The other area on the coast you could consider is Melaka
It has several new condominiums coming up, but beware of AirBnBs in some of the newer ones. ( noisy invaders at the weekends and holidays)
Houses are available in the same area ( Klebang)
The State also has 4 golf courses, three have houses on them for rent and sale.
Tiara...........larger houses quite well developed.
Orna ..........A few for rent and sale but less developed.
A'Famosa....inland and not a good location for supermarkets etc.
These three all have facilities including a pool and restaurants.
Supermarket shopping is fine for day to day goods, Anything really special you need to drive to find Jaya Grocer, the nearest being in Nilai.
Singapore border is just over 2 hours drive to Tuas...........Cross border car hire can be expensive. The bus is super cheap.
KLIA is about an hour and a half drive...............taxi/car is about RM 160 each way.
Melaka is not packed with expats..............good or bad depending on your requirements.

Is that Malaysia side of Tuas before customs or Singapore side after customs.
And are you starting the journey in the centre of Malacca or at the Ayer Keroh toll?

But wherever your start and finish line is 'just over two hours' must mean not stopping for toilet breaks and not heeding the 110 kph limit.
imo.

I read last week in the news about water shortages in Melaka. Did you experience any rationing where you live?

From one of the golf clubs in Ayer Keroh to the Malaysia Side of Tuas is just over 2 hours with no speeding, no stopping
Can check it on Google maps which shows 2 hours 8 mins.

Re Water shortages...........

Indeed there are restrictions at the moment with water on alternate days.
Most houses have large tanks in the roof, Condominiums have tanks up on high as well so generally folk in either types of dwelling are not directly affected.
I believe it may get a bit more serious soon unless it rains soon. 2019 had just over 50% or normal rainfall and the reservoirs are pretty low.
Every area was not affected but the news yesterday stated the areas would be expanded to include some Industrial areas and Tourist areas.

Must be additional 30min into centre of Malacca and 20 mins min to get to Singapore side of Tuas if no jam. Further 25 min to centre of Singapore.
And I suppose Google doesn't account for all the lorries overtaking at 50kph in the outside lane.
Or of Singapore cars with headlights blazing bombing along in the outside lane daring anyone to overtake before they pass them.

Excellent health care facilities.
And a quite a big expat community.
Not as perfect and high quality as Singapore, but also not so over regulated and costly.
Penang is the place to be!
We will finally purchase our landed property end of this year (we have a dog).
My family got burgled in Singapore when we lived there (in the sixties :P).
But seriously, I'm more worried about crime in the UK than in Malaysia.
I agree that you should try to keep a fairly low profile, we're not going to buy a super Villa but a semi-D or a modest single story with garden.
Metal gates on doors and windows are standard in Malaysia.
You need to be seriously high on the Net worth ladder to gain PR status in Singapore (see attachment).
Properties cost millions of S$$$$
But it's the complete lack of culture in Singapore that made us prefer to retire in Malaysia.
Singapore's become one gigantic shopping mall!
