If you’re up Batu Ferringhi way it could be worth looking in the stream next to the ‘By the Sea’ development, near The Boatman restaurant.

The other evening I saw three huge monitor lizards in there. Each of them must have been easily five or six feet long. Certainly the biggest ones I've ever seen in Penang. A tourist told me he’d also seen them on the beach earlier. I occasionally get them in the garden, but not that big.

When I was living at H Residence I got out of the lift to go to the 2nd floor car park with my 10 yo daughter and came face to face with a massive one. Easily 6 feet long. We both just stared at each other. He must have just wandered up the ramp. Used to also see a lot at mainland golf courses and Bukit Jambul is plagued with them.

I've seen some fairly big 'uns at Straits Quay though not as big as JC3's. Maybe 4 foot long.

Some years ago, on a holiday on Langkawi I suddenly saw one on the side of the road at Pantai Cenang. It was some 5 foot long. I didn't know those animals at the time and wasn't sure whether I was supposed to freeze or flight. In the end the animal didn't care at all about me and continued on its way. Only later I learned that I shouldn't be too worried.

4 feet, 5 and 6 feet lizards reminds me when Paddy wanted to sell his pet python on ebay.
One guy responded "Is it big?"
Paddy replied "Friggin' massive."
Response "Yeh! but how many feet?"
"None!" exclaimed Paddy "It's a snake you friggin idjeet"

There are certainly quite a few along the shoreline in the morning sun by the Quayside/Straits Quay path. They are quite skittish though & hide as soon as they see you looking in their direction. I have taken a few pictures, I hope the links work.
