Holiday in Malaysia (from Australia)

Hello Far East Forumers!

Seasider from the Australian forum suggested I posted my question in here, in case anyone has any suggestions or thoughts.

We're thinking of going to Malaysia on holiday in October. We can both manage 10 days off work and fancy somewhere close-ish since our last holiday was to Costa Rica which took 24 hours to get to!

Have already been to Bali and other bits of Indonesia, various bits of Thailand and the Philippines, Cook Is, Singapore, Fiji and French Polynesia and would like to go somewhere we've never been. So thought Malaysia?

So we're thinking a few days in KL and a few days on a beach to chillax (Redang?).

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts/suggestions/places to stay/go/avoid? It will be the husband and I (don't have kids).

Thank you!

Don't spend too much time in KL.
Two nights will be enough if you get there early and leave late.

If you like the beach then Penang also a lot of Heritage.

Diving then the Perhentians.

I really like Malacca for Heritage but doubt you'd enjoy 7 nights there.

Sarawak and Sabah are great but maybe not for the first visit.

Some of the islands off the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia are enjoyable but again not a lot to do for 7 ish nights.

Maybe you can enlarge on what you like and then there are a lot on yur who will help.

Thanks very much ex reg. All we really want is somewhere different to have a look around (never been to KL so though that would be good), and then just somewhere nice to relax (nice resort on a beach) for a few days.

We've had a big holiday this year so this is just a shorter closer break while we can both get a bit of time off at the same time!

Langkawi is great!! Do check the smarttraveller.com.au website regarding current warnings for some of the islands off Sabah. I received a text message from the Aus embassy yesterday on this.

Good comments from exReg as usual.

Just thinking what the weather may be like in October... still tail end of rains on the west side of mainland?

I'd put a vote in for Langkawi if you're not too bothered if it rains or not. It's an interesting island, very laid back, very Malay.

If the weather bothers you, why not come to Penang and hire a car. Plenty of variety, things to do. The heritage stuff in Georgetown. If you've got a car, you can actually find some half decent beaches just beyond Bt Ferringhi (and prob other places). But if you are really seriously thinking BEACH, Penang may not be first choice.

Thank very much bakedbean. We were advised to not go to the west coast in October due to the rainy season, so that's why we have looked at the east coast and come across Redang?

I've never been to Redang - but agree with Bakedbean on a trip to Penang; with relatively few facilities you can also head to the Perhentian Islands off the northeast coast - beautiful sand, diving option and snorkelling great too; if you are interested you can get a night train from Kuala Lumpur (bookable online, with e-ticket, or simply fly with Air Asia) and get a reasonably priced taxi from Kota Bharu to the jetty to then get a boat there. Worth the trip if you have time.
