Healthcare in Kuala Lumpur
 

Hi there

I'm new to the forums and this is my first post :) My husband, myself and our 4 month old baby will be moving out to KL in the next couple of months and I just wanted to ask about healthcare

It should be covered by my husband's work, but just in case it's not, what's the best thing to do? Do you need to have private healthcare insurance or can you do it on a pay as you go basis?

my main concern is doctor appointments, checkups and immunisations for our son

I'm not in Malaysia, I'm in Singapore - but we are covered for medical insurance by my husband's company with BUPA International. We have to pay for the first 10% of medical claims under this scheme and dental is limited to 2000GBP per person per year. We can go to any doctor we choose, although we do get a discount with Raffles medical group (not sure if they operate in Malaysia?).

Anyway, I'm writing to let you know of a great expat association called 'MANZA' - the Malaysian Australian & New Zealand Association and open to all nationalities. I'm a member of ANZA in Singapore, and it's a great way to make new friends and to socialise, which in turn helps you to settle in more quickly.

'...should be...' is not good enough.

Find out exactly what is covered by your husband's contract before he signs it.

And if he has signed it already then definitely find out what he has signed up for.
Better late than never.

well he's going out on Sunday for a reccy mission so he'll find all that out - put it this way, they've not been the best at helping us so far....

Enter with caution - there may be dragons! If prospective employers are unhelpful to start with - that does not auger well.

oh don't I know it! he works for them in the UK but either transfer to KL or be out of a job basically

hopefully it will all sort itself out once he's out there

There have been one or two threads similar to yours, 'go or sack'.

That's a sign of the times.
But it doesn't mean you have no negotiating position.

As long as he is aware of what T&C he should/could be on he can at least work towards getting the best he can.

I won't offer any more suggestions because ultimatums from either side don't work.
If he is badly done by then his work may well suffer.
Good companies recognise this and do their best to discuss things and allay fears.
Moving overseas is a big step for a family whether it's a shotgun affair or not.
