Health Insurance Choices
 

Hi Everybody!

Doing a bit of a research on health insurances in Malaysia. :unsure:

Can you comment on what insurance you have and why you like it or dislike it please?

We are a family of three: me, my husband and our two year old daughter. And would like to be covered in Malaysia and possibly the rest of the world as we like to travel.

Most Malaysian medical cost insurance companies only cover costs incurred within Malaysia. For foreigners they often explicitly exclude costs incurred when outside Malaysia (for Malaysians are such costs, when on a holiday abroad, included). For those costs you can take a travel insurance.
Comparing the packages that the various companies offer is a complicated task. It is complicated as the situation is different for each person or family and therefore the priority setting differs per person. It is very much a personal choice about which insurance fits your situation best.

I use the Reside Worldwide Medical Plan from Seven Corners. I'm insured worldwide except USA and Canada. The fairly high deductible I chose means that it's only suitable for accidents and emergencies or grave new illnesses, but basic medical care in Malaysia is cheap and I pay my own way for that. The Reside Worldwide premium is much cheaper than any other quote I found online, and I assure you I looked pretty hard!

But I'm a single guy. For a family it may be different.

My wife and I live in Malaysia most of the time and take holidays abroad departing from Malaysia several times a year.

We found it most economical to have Health Insurance that covers us in Malaysia only (we use AIA here who we have found to be excellent), and very reasonably priced Annual Travel Insurance (purchased in Malaysia from AXA) that covers us for travelling abroad and essentially covers emergency treatment abroad and repatriation to Malaysia if necessary for longer term treatment. Once back in Malaysia the local Health Insurance kicks in again.

So true. After comparing AIA, Kurnia and Great Eastern for quite a long time, I chose Kurnia. We took "with health insurance card".

Note that Great Eastern does not give a discount for people that don´t use an agent.

I cannot give any recommendation, because we did not have any case yet where we needed it :fingerscrossed:

I agree as everyone says take out local insurance as you are living here then travel insurance which is then timed & priced zoned i.e. Asia / middle east / Europe / USA. for when you travel. However do make sure if you follow this route, & you are taken ill abroad, & then you return for follow up treatment, does the travel insurance or the Malaysian insurance cover cover this, its a grey area you need to define from both companies before you take out policies.

Due to a pre-existing condition no local insurance companies would touch me, I ended up with IMG Europe Ltd. The policy covers all of asia except Japan & Singapore & with a high deductible it is affordable.
