This is a continuation of a different thread about marrying my Malaysian Moslem fiancée. I’m asking for actual experiences as the amount of contradictory advise and anecdotal “evidence” is staggering.

We we had decided on this course of action; we would get married in Thailand, in Bangkok using the services of a legal company. I would convert on the day of the ceremony and all documents would be registered with the Thai authorities and at the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok. Then, on our return to KL we would register the marriage as required with the religious authorities.

So so far so good, but then one of my fiancee’s friends said that she would still have to get permission from the Islamic Council in KL (JAWI) before the ceremony or face a court case and fine when we went to register the marriage with them on our return from Bangkok. They would also require my conversion certificate and permission from a wali ( her brother) for her to marry before we had the ceremony in Bangkok.

Does anyone know any any facts here?

In Malaysia it seems that speaking to officials in offices does not necessarily get you any further than what that particular individual thinks at the time.
I asked for actual experiences.
