Long-time Malaysian people, what do you consider better news/ media sourcse and what are there biases? I have started trying to read Malaysian newspapers online like the Star, but it's hard to tell if I'm reading the Telegraph or the Guardian. Though at least I know it's not the UK Daily Star lol

All newspapers, radio stations and TV stations are government controlled or owned/affiliated by political parties in the BN coalition. For example the Star is controlled by the MCA (Malaysian Chinese Association). Opposition parties have no access to "official" media. There are some websites that are more or less independent, I read the Malaysian Insider, but I find most of the stories poorly written. Very often stories in the foreign media on Malaysian subjects are better investigated and researched. Of course they have to be less worried being prosecuted when they publish a story the Malaysian Government doesn't like.

There's an old joke saying that, if one wishes to really, truly learn what's going on in Malaysia, one really, truly needs to read Singapore newspapers - and vice versa :hysterical:

I reckon we have the luxury of watching the drama unfold from the comfort of an armchair because we're not really a stakeholder of any sort in that country. At most, I lose the couple of hundred thousand I have stuck in the time deposit at Maybank as part of my aborted attempt at the MM2H - for the citizenry, it's 42 billion big ones - and that's a huge chunk of money to go unaccounted for, in any situation!

"Interesting" wouldn't be the first adjective that readily comes to mind in describing the situation in Malaysia at the moment - "unacceptable", "corrupt", "calamitous" maybe, "woeful", "disastrous", "shameful" definitely.

When I first moved to Singapore, I faithfully read the Straits Times every day and absorbed everything in there, hook line and sinker. And it even influenced where we chose to retire to. We first retired to Thailand. Malaysia seemed awful.... well, it must be...the Straits Times painted this picture of this crime infested place. Dreadful.

Then we left Singapore, and the propaganda stopped. Actually, one thing you can say in favour of Thailand is that they don't give a hoot about other countries, so you don't see so much negative press about neighbouring countries.

And then..... we started to feel different about Malaysia  and checked out Penang...and it was actually OK. And we are still here 5 years later.

Just saying :sneaky:

You mean you haven't been burgled, robbed, car-jacked, racially abused or raped? Are you sure it's the same Malaysia that you read about in the press?

To be honest, neither The Straits Times nor The New Straits Times are anything more than propaganda for their respective political masters. I'd rather believe what GOV.UK has to say about the safety and security for British travelers to Malaysia than what a Singapore tabloid might find fit to print!

GOV.UK's advice for British nationals traveling to Malaysia

Compare that with GOV.UK's page on Singapore

Just saying as well ;)

Not sure about the burglary, robbery, car-jacking or the bit about the rape but, as an "Ang Mo", you probably wouldn't feel the racial discrimination as much as a native/citizen non-Malay would.

I have many Malaysian born, ethnically Chinese and Indian friends and colleagues who've come down to Singapore to work because of racial discrimination and abuse. So in my case, it's more a bit of hearing it from the horse's mouth as opposed to reading it from the propaganda on the web or in print.

There is a reason for the great brain drain from Malaysia, you know...
