Chinese New Year 'Tax'

I have my haircut at a ladies hairdresser in Penang. A get a very good dry cut there, usually RM25 and I always use the same stylist.

Yesterday she told me the price was my normal RM25, plus another RM2 for CNY. I paid up quietly - as having found a decent hairdresser it's a relationship I cherish. And as I have very little hair already, she's not someone I'd want to upset.

Has anyone experienced this CNY 'tax' elsewhere? It's a new one on me.

20%+ price increases "due to GST" (What?!) I've got used to now.

Hairdressers do top up the fees at CNY...at least the ladies hairdressers do. And quite often the fee doesn't come down after CNY.

That sounds a bit steep to me for a dry cut though, especially if you have a normalish man's hairdo. Of course, if you have flowing locks like Robert Plant that may explain ;)

I'm paying RM 35 for cut, hair wash including enthusiastic head massage, and blow dry.
