Hi all
looking for some help. My family and I are moving to KL in July. For their dependents pass i need to get our wedding cert and the kids birth certs notarised/authenticated by the relevant authorities in the country of issue, followed by certification by the malaysian authorities before my employees in KL (The University of Malaya) will process the employment and dependent passes.

Here's the problem. Im British but I was married to my wife (who's Irish) in Ireland. Our first son was born in Ireland and our second in the US. We currently live in the US.

So i have now had the wedding cert and first sons birth cert authenticated by the Irish authorities and the second sons birth cert authenticated by the US authorites (all that took weeks), but im having trouble getting a sensible answer from the malaysian authorities about getting them to certify these documents. I have been told that, as a british citizen, i need to forward the relevant documents to the Malaysian High commision in london. But only docs that are authenticated by the Foreign Commonwealth Office UK will be accepted by the high commision. Obviously the FCO UK wont be able to authenticate irish and US documentation. So what do i do? I cant be the only Brit married to a non brit currently living in a third country?

any advice would be appreciated. Ive been going around in circles with this for a month now.

Hi

I would assume that you just need to visit the Irish and British Embassys/Consulates closest to you in the US?

My wife is non-British, but we just go to the closest consulate of her origin country to get authentications/extensions/verifications done.

Sorry, mis-read your post. You've already done the steps I mentioned above!

Not too sure, as it seems a catch-22 situation. Maybe they mean only the British docs going through the FCO?

My understanding is if the docs are in English, ie birth certs etc then they don't need notarising. I'm also in the process of moving to KL in Sept this year and my husbands company has hired a visa agent in KL to sort his out for us. I also asked if our marr cert etc need notarising and we've been told if they're in English then it's ok as they will just show the originals to the immigration dept in KL. To be honest your employers should be helping you to sort this all out you shouldn't have to do all the work yourself.

thanks for the comments. Yeah HR at the university are doing all the running but they need me to get the certs authenticated. Then they do everything else. It seems a crazy request as well...we didnt need to do any of this for our US visas, but apparently its necessary. I contacted the malaysian embassy in london to see if they did need notarised certs to process a dependents pass. answer below:

For purpose of applying dependent pass, the copies of the Irish documents must be certified by the Irish Embassy. After that it must be must be legalized (endorsed) by the Consular Official at the High Commission of Malaysia, London before its usage in Malaysia.

maybe all this isnt necessary for a UK citizen, but it appears that it is a requirement for Irish and US citizens. Does anyone know of any easy way to get these now notarised US and irish docs certified by malaysian authorities? can it be done once we are in the country?
