Tanjung Bungha. 3 or 4 galvanised mast's about 15 meters high going up. Nothing on them yet.

I have a strong background in radio transmission so don't think these are going to be GSM mobile cell phone transmitters or repeaters. Maximum transmission distance of a 1.8Ghz signal in ideal conditions would be around 35Km. Even in a congested area with hills you only need a cell mast every 5Km and worst case in a very build up area would require a mast every 600 meters.

So why a mast outside the 7-11 on the corner and another one on a corner by the traffic lights to the main road just 40 meters away. And another mast right outside Straits mini market.

My phone has a great signal in all these areas, -60dBm, so can't think why extra repeaters are going up.

Its a sad day if they are going to be CCTV cameras as I don't like to be spied upon. Of course they will say its for our protection, but that raises another question. If the gov think its that dodgy around here that they need to put in CCTV, then that's another negative.

Oh really? There is one popped up at the junction of Jalan Fettes and Jalan Tg Tokong. I assumed (wrongly) it was something to do with cell phone coverage but, thinking about it, probably not tall enough.

Have to say I am all for cameras. Some crime creeps into Penang from time to time and any deterrent is good I reckon.

They've also placed a new mast at the crossing in front of Sunshine building. Which surprises me as there is already a mast with CCTV on that crossing.
I agree that these masts are not suitable for cell phone, as they are not high enough. I guess that they want to monitor traffic, which is often rather congested on Jalan Tanjung Tokong.

It will be nice if they can control the lights, because traffic can be backed up the entire length of Jalan Kelawei due the lights at Gottlieb and Fettes being out of sync.

Cameras are all very well but they are as much use as a chocolate tea pot if no-one is watching. There are already cameras on a the traffic lights for a junction near us. It has no impact on the behaviour of motor cyclists and some car drivers who still pay no attention to the rules of the road and get away with it.

Speed cameras perhaps? Bear in my mind I am not familiar with the locations mentioned so that could well be a silly suggestion...

I've heard two more suggestions as to what they might be.

A tsunami early warning system (better late than never, I suppose).

And - you'll love this one - mosque prayer extension speakers.

There is already a tsunami warning system. We were at Turtle Beach one day when they decided to do an unanounced test. Hard to believe they would put a siren in such a remote location and not built up areas. Could be an upgrade maybe.

Certainly don't like your second option.

This is very strange. One morning last week I woke up and I swear that twice in the night I thought I heard sirens (like a tsunami siren). And, no, I'd only had one glass of wine.

B.F. road is full of CCTV poles, they are slowly migrating along the roads everywhere, even today I saw a new one in GT at the intersection as you turn in by Pranglin Mall & Komtar Walk, that triangular spot where the pedestrian lights are pretty certain thats new.

I wonder where all the monitors are & who is watching them, no idea if these are for traffic management of a part of a larger security network, there is no doubt these CCTV footages are an immense help when ever there is a terrorist attack anywhere.
