Buying an unlocked phone in KL
Hi,
Hope someone can help. I'll be in KL soon and want to buy an unlocked I-phone. Is this possible and if so, where?
Many thanks in advance!

If you buy your iPhone from a retailer rather than a network carrier, then it should be unlocked. As to where you buy it, I'm afraid I don't know KL that well.

When in KL we go Low Yat Plaza IT & Gadget Mall in Bukit Bintang/Imbi area.
Quite a number of stalls are closed on week days when it's quieter. Best time is Fri evening, all day Saturday and Sunday mid day when all the stalls are in business and more promotions.
School holiday is also a busy promotion time.

I saw some shops selling electronics and mobile phones at Gurney Plaza and Paragon and was surprised how expensive these items are in Penang. Prices seemed similar to Western countries to me, which stands out as everything else is so much cheaper.

Best place is Prangin Mall, Atrium A, ground floor. Loads of mobile phone stalls. I have bought 3 phones there. Why not get a Samsung?

Re: Buying an unlocked phone in KL
My wife and I will be looking for mobile phones but each of us wants something different from it. So most likely will we end up with different phones. We will be "light users": only needing the phone to make a few phone calls and do some text messaging (such as WhatsApp). Having the phone work as a hotspot (mobile internet network to WiFi) to connect our tablets when away from home would be a nice-to-have feature.
I prefer to have a phone which is small, whereas she prefers to have a phone with a clear screen, and probably a bit larger screen size. I want to take her to a place where she can see all these phones side by side so that making a choice is easier for her.
Because of these different requirements on the phones will we most likely end up with different phones and will I most likely have to look for a SIM-only subscription provider.

Fenella,
Follow this link
https://locate.apple.com/my/en/
This will give you the authentic sellers of Apple products. Type in Kuala Lumpur under location and they will all appear.
You can buy iPod unlocked at an Apple seller. I did that once before. I didn't want to use the iPod as a phone at the time (for various reasons).
For those in Penang, there is an Apple shop, Switch, on level 1 at Straits Quay.
Again in Penang, as IVV says, a lot of folks buy other devices at Prangin Mall. If you don't want to head into town, I've found Gurney Plaza pretty good. I think it's level 3 and 4 where all the electronics are. I bought a Samsung smartphone there.

I have been using a Samsung II for 3+ years till battery started playing up last year. Love the camera as I use it a lot. So I hardly carry my Samsung camera.
Son got me an ASUS ZEN Phone 6 for Christmas last year. Big screen, good camera and dual SIM card which are all the features I want. He got it from Gurney.

Is there a similar electronics mall in Penang?
