Brits in Penang - Free afternoon Tea
#1

A friend passed this on to me so thought I would share on here.
The British High Commission in KL is holding an Afternoon Tea session for any Brits that would like to come along. It will be held at the Penang Club on Wednesday June 24th 2.30pm to 5.30pm. That is in Georgetown, Penang.
See the pic attached. You need to confirm to the email address on there. Unfortunately that date is not good for me. Pity as I would've liked to have gone.
If anyone on here goes, maybe they can give a little review on this topic after the event?

Thanks BB - I shall certainly go and hob-knob it up a bit. Wonder what the dress code is?

Yes, it was a good turn out, maybe 100 people which, considering how difficult it is to park in that part of town, is excellent.
I guess a lot of the information provided was already known by quite a few people but it was nice to get confirmation that there is a clear understanding that British citizens do not need to carry their passport around with them in Malaysia, providing they have a photocopy.
A good presentation by Penang General hospital shows they are providing more and better services and are expanding rapidly. They say they are "considerably" cheaper than private hospitals and can provide similar care.
It was mentioned that, in the unfortunate event of an accident, it is an ambulance from their hospital which will arrive on scene and their hospital will provide emergency treatment without requiring a go-ahead from insurers or a credit card guarantee.
In reality, few nursing staff at Penang General speak English and although they have 3 classes, the 1st and 2nd class are usually booked up well in advance. For these reasons most expats choose a private hospital and pay the extra. If you do have an accident and are still compos mentis you can even ask for an ambulance from your preferred clinic to pick you up.
A good spread was laid on afterwards and everyone seemed to have a good time seeing old faces and catching up on the latest news.

Thanks for the update IVV
I'll copy and put a link in to your comments on the Emergencies - calling an Ambulance thread. That's good info to know.
