Best of British
It’s raining in Penang this morning, and I’m itching to get outside.
Meanwhile…I just read that John Lewis (probably my favourite British store, sorry Screwfix…) is now stocking a 500-strong range of its home products at Robinsons in Gardens Mall, KL. The range includes bed, bath, tableware, gifts and home accessories. That got me thinking about creating a list of British Retailers with a presence in Malaysia. There seems to be more opening up shop everyday, with some of the malls looking much like a UK high street. Here’s a few for starters. These are actual independent stores, i.e. not concessions within another store. Perhaps they could get together and take over the nearly empty Island Plaza Mall in Penang. At least there's some Waitrose foodstuffs in the basement Cold Storage supermarket already. Anyone fancy a garibaldi biscuit? Know any more to add? Apologies for any errors, especially if any stores I've listed aren’t British. Just to confuse British India is Malaysian, Laura Ashley is now Malaysian, and I was disappointed to discover Crabtree & Evelyn is American! Not sure there are many more retailers left trading in the UK. Is BHS a fire sale?

Yes. Sir Philip Green sold BHS last year for £1. Unfortunately the new owner, Retail Acquisitions, has also failed to turn the company around and BHS recently entered administration. 11,000 jobs at stake. Sounds like there’s a bloody great £500m+ hole in the pension fund too. A mess.

Re: Best of British
I have a friend working for BHS. She's been there 19 yrs.
It's an absolute scam. It should be criminal but of course it won't be. |
Re: Best of British
Thanks for this list btw. It's really helpful for those of who are not yet in the country :)
