Advice on buying a 2nd Hand Car
I just arrived to my new apt. in KL and I am looking to buy a second hand Perodua Myvy (2006-2009). I have browsed the online sites;
www.carlist.my
www.carsifu.my
www.autoworld.com.my
I some cars within "striking range" from dealers and private persons but here are some questions:
1. Is there any way of verifying if the car is "accident free", has an untampered odo, no liens/loans attached, etc (like carfax in the US)
2. How reliable are car dealers here in preparing the proper paper work when money has exchanged hands (or is better to use a private lawyer to do this?)
3. Do you have any other tips on how not to be taken advantage of since I know little about the laws and customs here? (yeah, I know used car dealers are 'tricky" everywhere but I know the "rules of the game" in the US and EU - I unfortunately don't know them here :-(
Cheers,
PeeBee

I use mudah.my for car searches: http://www.mudah.my/Malaysia/Cars-for-sale-1020
If you're in the MM2H program, you can import a car duty-free which makes a huge difference in price.
A good way to have the car checked thoroughly is to get AAM (Automobile Association of Malaysia) to do it. Take membership with them and make an appointment to get the car inspected for a nominal amount. Note that only their main service centre does it: http://www.aam.org.my/
Second-hand cars require a B5 report from Puspakom for Transfer of Ownership which costs RM30/-. For those buying on hire-purchase, a B7 report is required which costs RM60/-. I suggest doing both whether or not hire-purchase is used. The negative side is that it takes about half-a-day to get these inspections done. One suggestion is to get ask a car salesman to recommend a reliable runner to do it for you which may cost another RM200/- (not too sure about this cost though).

Most car dealers are honest, but conmen are also common. You must have possession of all the documents filled up and signed before payment, as well as the actual car itself. It's good to give a call to the Road Transport Department to ensure proper ownership and no blacklist. http://www.jpj.my/Ownership_Transfer_and_Payment.htm
If you're using a dealer, it's always better to go to one that has been recommended.
