5 Year Anniversary in Malaysia - Thoughts So Far!

Hi all,

It has been absolutely ages since I have last written here, mainly because I've been so busy! Which is a good thing!

We just had our 5th year anniversary of our move to Malaysia couple of weeks back! And we're still happy, glad to have made the move and comfortably settled here in Subang Jaya!

Some thoughts:
  1. We are definitely experiencing a small but noticeable cost in living!
  2. We had a good experience with hospitals as we had a baby boy born here last year. A Malaysian baby!
  3. My training and consultancy company has grown enough to start being taxed more! The tax system has taken getting used to and is a bit strange, as well as being high when compared to income and general expenditure.
  4. I've experienced setting up a second business of a digital marketing agency company, with a local partner, which has opened my eyes as to how Malaysians tend to deal with each other in doing business as well as the 'favours' it can bring in terms of networking.
  5. I've also noticed that it's getting more challenging moving to Malaysia, as I have tried to help a couple of people shift here. Things like bank accounts, immigration and paid up capital requirements are making things more challenging.
  6. For those already here, such as ourselves, it is relatively easy to continue to stay and get visa renewals and passes etc. But there is a price for that ease of service as costs have gone up!

Anyway, just some thoughts that came to my mind!

Thanks all.

1. I wouldn't change anything, as I didn't have that much choice or flexibility with what I was doing when moving!

2. I don't regret the move at all.

3. Most people move here due to employment or getting a job. i don't have any experience with that at all, as I set up my own business. But what I do know is that things are changing every year. It definitely isn't as easy to make the shift and setup your own business as it used to be. I've come across other expats who are struggling to get things done to settle down here.

4. I'm renting in Subang Jaya. Same place since the day we moved!

5. I'm fortunate with the car as another expat had to leave the country and I just took over making his payments for him and took the car too.

6. I don't actually have health insurance as stillshopping around! And then delayed things. But have used medical services on an as needed basis and had no issues.
