No, it's not quite what you think (except the first 15 seconds or so)..... after that Billy and Dick Gaughan launch into the version intended by its author, Jim Connell, who wrote the words in Co.Meath in 1889. This is to the tune of "The White Cockade", a Jacobite anthem. When and why this was replaced by "O Tannenbaum" seems lost in the mists of time... however, remember when you listen to the words that they were written by a socialist Irish subject of the British Empire during the reign of Queen Victoria - so any later connections could not be forseen....

Focus 8 is a good listen, not that easy to get into, but worth it if you can last the pace.
