I'd forgotten about those mustard and cress cultivations. Ah, happy days.

We went on "nature walks", too.

We made an awful lot of cress in school as well. I didn't learn anything from it except that cress is tasteless and can be grown on a cotton wool ball.

Our idea of a nature walk came much later - it involved jumping over the wall to for a crafty smoke in the university car park next door. Ahhh, the sixth form, great days

'Cross-country' never went further than the underpass next to the school for me. Of course the PE teacher was too lazy to check on anyone.

Broad beans were popular, too. Endless studies of cotyledons - I never really understood the excitment myself.

We grew Hyacinths in primary school, for reasons best known to themselves. I did always enjoy collecting conkers, sycamore seeds and the like for the nature table, though. Autumn was always my favourite.

Now I loved cross country, even being chosen to represent my school in a county competition. Even went running during free time in my last years at school.

My favourite thing that involved cross country at school was in upper sixth, when we were allowed to take a 'study' period instead of games (to revise for our A-leves ) but we were able to essentially have the run of the library and the darkroom. We'd decided to go for a fag break; or it may have been a herbal jazz cigarette break - but whatever it was, we were standing in our usual spot, puffing away when all the cross country runners went by, looking rather tired and unhappy.

1997 was the best year in the history of years. F*** adulthood, I want to be back in school again

School sports...

Concrete underpass, smelling faintly of.... something. Pack of No.6 or JPS if you were flash, and a flagon of Strongbow.

Must have been the other side of the pond.

Late 60's were pretty great too. :P
