Never had the chance to hear if Bocelli could fill an opera house without a mic - in fact I've never heard him sing without one - but Pavarotti most certainly could. He used to make my heart go pitter pat when I saw him in London.

Try Jussi Bjoerling & Robert Merrill for the real deal
Start with 'Au fond Du Temple Saint'...enjoy.

Have to disagree. Bocelli's voice has nice tone, but he could never get the majestic strength, passion, and soaring notes into it that the young Pavarotti could.

I know you consider yourself our resident cultural expert, but I'll pass, thanks. I know what I like and I'll remain happily ignorant.

I rest my case.
The quality of the recording isn't very good, but you can hear him soar.
Still makes me cry.

Sorry, but his voice just isn't big enough to do opera justice, nor to grab my heart strings. It's a pretty voice, but pretty isn't enough.

Don't get me wrong - I love Pavarotti's voice and could never understand how he got pushed into the "Three Tenors" trio, with Placido Domingo (OK, but not in the same league) and Jose Carreras (weak and flat). I just think Bocelli's sublime tone wins.
