A loofah is a kind of squash? They certainly look like it.
We have one of those orchids, too. Ours was from Trader Joe.

Mexican customs used to be extra careful to protect the valuable loofah market. When they caught a tourist trying to take one back into the US they would confiscate if ripe, or shake all the seeds out if dried to keep people from growing their own.
I had a terrific debate with a lady who was certain loofahs were sea sponges.
