Well, interestingly there my last CBC was different - but then, it was in the UK! The brothers were in the minority and form masters led the statutory "RI" period. Given the fact that the Bible wasn't being pumped into us, those tended to be discussions on "topical issues" (and this was the early 70's) - so topics of contraception, abortion, etc. were discussed (other things weren't....) We even studied comparative religion for goodness sake!

One of my form masters was actually a Protestant! Imagine....

.... It was the Old Testament that did it for me.....
I kept asking Bro. Martin, et-al, if knowing a woman was some sort of ancient hobby before all the recorded begettings took place; - and what it exactly involved....
This seemed to annoy him because his eyes would turn bright blue and I got sent to wait outside the head's study.....

So this is the conundrum for 2018 then: would you rather have a brick made of pee, or from the air pollution in Beijing?

I needed to see a doctor tonight (Saturday), not an emergency but not something could wait until my GP's normal hours. Booked an online appointment with an after hours medical service and a doctor turned up at my door an hour later. No payment required as the service bulk bills Medicare, Australia's universal health care scheme. Smiling and thankful tonight.

How a health service should work.

It seems to be such a difficult concept to understand in this country.

If you can't shoehorn in a way to force someone to pay for something needlessly, America isn't interested.

They are finding it where I am. I have to find a new GP, because the one I have (who is on my insurance list of providers) has introduced a new "VIP service". You pay a premium, direct to her, on top of the insurance payments, for the "privilege" of a shorter wait time for appointments and for longer appointments so you actually have time to talk to the doctor.

Yeah. No. Finding another doctor.

It isn't just her by the way - it's an actual business model being introduced by a third party who runs it for the doctors.

Up here doctors can choose to be paid a salary by the province or for each consultation. No wonder our doctor is happy to double up on appointments, seeing more patients in a day - which we actually don't mind as it's very easy to get appointments and when he runs late we don't mind too much because on another day we'd have helped been the cause of it.

But there is concern at the huge variation in the amount certain doctors bill the province.

Apparently there is also a practice among some family doctors to "repeat refer" to a specialist, say, 6 months after the last one because the specialist gets more for a 'new' referral than their own, follow up 6 monthly appointments.

That's a load of crap right there.

The phrase 'business model' (utter cringe by itself) has no place anywhere near a doctors' office. Don't want to create the illusion that doctors are all about treating illness though, I suppose.

Great idea! Just like asking you to pay extra to avoid the queues at airport security that they caused in the first place...... or to get "priority boarding" on flights where the seats have already been allocated.......

But stupid issues arise in the best of systems. Earlier this year a general blood test indicated an underactive thyroid for the first time ever and my GP was ready to prescribe thyroxin rather than ask for a repeat test "because you've had one this quarter". 3 months later, a test showed my thyroxin levels to be near normal......

Priority boarding = being able to have my carry-on (and not have to check it) and have it near my seat.

Bad system by the GP, should never prescribe on just the one test.
