Yes, I'm implying Eurasians made it to North America before the Vikings and Magellan et al. Come at me.

You forgot St. Brendan!!

But why not? Long-distance travel is nothing new, the Goidelic Celts migrated to Ireland from western Iberia somewhere around 1700 BC. The Phoenicians founded Lisbon around 700BC and came to Cornwall for tin. Then you have the role of chance - Leif Ericsson, supposedly saw Vinland for the first time after being blown off course to Greenland, Columbus thought he had discovered a way to the Far East and Cabral discovered Brazil whilst trying to use the "Volta do Mar" to hop down the African coast.

What made me smile today was a random act of kindness. I was shopping in our local Trader Joe’s (a fab American grocery chain store which is actually owned by Aldi) and I was chatting with an employee at the checkout. We were discussing tea - I was buying their Irish teabags which are stronger than their insipid English Breakfast ones and he proudly told me that he adds milk to his tea just like the Brits do.

Then he asked me to wait for a moment and left his till to go to another part of the shop.....and returned with a bunch of flowers as a complimentary gift! (I think their employees are encouraged to do something like this from time to time, but it was so lovely to be a recipient! I love Trader Joe’s

That boat looks a bit dodgy for a transatlantic trip.

... and it's all true!

I had a fear of nuns, I remember the smell off their black habits to this day!

This wasn't helped by the fact that my ma was housekeeper in a convent!!

Then 7 years with the Christian Brothers! I never saw (or heard of) any "untoward behaviour", but jeez, they liked to use the strap!!
"Amadán!! Will ye learn nothin', 'less it's baten inta ye!!"

University came as a pleasant surprise!!

It's all TRUE - every word.
After 3 years 'treatment' I knew there really was a Guild of Wicked Women - and after another seven at the strap-hands of the Christian Brothers, you either emerged a zombified drone or a rebellious Levelling malcontent determined to wreak havoc and revenge on the rest of the world !!!.....

Not many zombified drones at my CBC school - but I did cause them problems. Rode a motorbike, hair down my back and a pancho moustache - the "male nuns" were horrified!! Had it not been for the fact that I was the first 15 hooker and already had a place at a Russell Group Uni, Jaysus knows the ructions..... Being virtually fireproof has its advantages!!
BUT, if you wanted to see "horrified", it was when the Jesuits came visiting. I remember two young SJs taking a question and answer session, no holds barred. "Why can't priests get married" was the question...... when the SJ started by saying "Well, theologically there's no reason, but....", I swear the Brother at the back of the class started climbing up the wall with his fingernails, he was so sure we'd all be thunderstruck!!

I was at a C of E independent school until 6th form, when I was unceremoniously moved to an insane 6th form college in London where I immediately and enjoyably went totally off the rails. But CofE schools are pretty mild. Minimal violence from the teachers, and they were more concerned with the tidiness of our hair and preventing us from talking in the hallways than with our immortal souls. Although we did have a "school psalm" which urged us to be as the polished corners of the temple. Nobody was very specific as to what that meant.

That's very cool. Whilst space exploration is fascinating, I do wish more money was invested in exploring the oceans.

Stands to reason that if Lief Ericsson was blown off course and ended up in Canada in 1025 (or whenever it was) that it could have happened countless times before then. Obviously more boats would have been lost at sea than actually made it but that doesn't mean nobody did.

Thank goodness he didn't go on to describe 'physical acts' or mention the S.E.X. word...
