. Not drinking in middle age can increase the risk of dementia as much as drinking too much, according to a report.

I'd be interested to see the Dementia figures for Portugal vs UK - I'm pretty certain that most men drink more than 6 glasses of wine a week! On the other hand, is there a suggestion that practising Muslims are more at risk from dementia than other sectors? The devil is in the detail.

It's a bit like the "recommendation" to avoid processed meats ...... I think a traditionally produced chourico is rather different to a "recovered meat" sausage and a dried ham is different to nitrate-injected bacon. It may be a daft rule of thumb, but it seems to me the "toxicity" of a foodstuff is directly proportional to the amount of human intervention in its production.... after all, we humans have had such great results when we try to "bend" nature!

As an Irishman, I never really took to the message that saturated fats are bad for you, whilst trans-fats aren't. Selling skimmed and semi-skimmed milk has been a great benefit to the dairy industry that can then sell us the butterfat separately!

Is this a case of statistics raising their ugly heads again?

I thought that it had been proven that there were 'other factors' at work when it came to dementia risk?
