We had Vonage for several years which cost $30/month with unlimited calls to UK landlines. I dumped them when I calculated (for the amount we used it) it was cheaper to pay for AT&T's international plan.
When I moved to my current job where they provided me a cell phone, we dropped AT&T and put my wife on Straight Talk for $45/mo unlimited everything. We buy an add-on international card for $10 which equates to 1000 minutes to UK which usually lasts us several months.
I call my mother every couple of weeks with occasional calls to others in UK.
Keep in touch mostly on Farsebook.

Oh well.

This made me smile: from a Graun piece on gender pay inequality in the airline industry...
"EasyJet has set itself a target that a fifth of all new pilots recruited should be female by 2020".
Who's going to pay for the gender reassignments?

Henry Bolton has been ousted as Ukip leader after party members backed a motion of no confidence in him.....
...Speculation is now mounting over whether Farage will return to the fray. Suzanne Evans, a senior Ukip figure, told the Press Association that it was crunch time for the party and that Farage should return to lead it.
“He really needs to step up to the plate now – he helped create this mess that we are in, he needs to help us get out of it,” she said

I do when I get to one of the British shops in the Auckland region but I have to take out a small mortgage to afford them.
Just baking a tin of gingerbread, smells heavenly. Not really the right weather for gingerbread (hot and humid) but I need cheering up. Cake makes me smile.

Article in Daily Mail about a woman who spent her life shoplifting. In the comments section someone suggested that she have the word THEIF tattooed on her forehead! Someone else commented - All we need is a tattoo artist that can’t spell! Ha ha. You can’t beat The Mail for a laugh.

Immigrants have been 'moving and mixing' across Europe since ancient times, groundbreaking DNA research reveals | The Independent
At my Council School we used a history text book (one copy each then) called ‘Our Island Nation’. It dictated that ancient Britons occupied and defended their island for many thousands of years, before the Roman invasion. On the fly-cover was a drawing of a group of half-naked men in animal skins sitting round a huge fire roasting something (though being pre-60’s no half-naked women were depicted, or even vaguely hinted at).
This was the default position, clearly a later influence on 52% of the current population. Like others I never had the ‘benefits’ of private education much less university, but this article adds more support to my view that half of accepted history must be wrong, with the remainder being re-written to suit circumstances and for subsequent social control.
Long live a Revolution...?
