Was reading out some general knowledge quizz questions to our bi-lingual son and my French wife (who isn't blond.......)
The idea was to see who could answer the question the quickest, the topic being traditional homes; where does a horse live (stable), prisoner (cell), lion (lair, den) etc.
My next question: Where does a mouse live? Wife blurted out rapidly, "A mouse-trap!"
Whilst rolling with laughter, we thought surely she can't better that crazy reply. We were so wrong........
Three questions later: Where does a Red Indian live?
Wife: this time full of conviction - blurted out rapidly, "In the garden!"
Son & I gobsmacked: "A red Indian? In the garden!"
Wife: "Oh, I thought you said red-onion..........."

The French! Food foremost on their minds again!

Every Christmas the Mater sets a general knowledge quiz for those currently in the UK. Questions culled from the National Press.
This year, 9 contestants, 5 with degrees, best score 8/30 - pathetic!

We're off to the UK for a holiday in June. Yes, that's the subject of a previous 'what made you smile today' post.

"But what made you smile today, Dreamy?" I hear you ask. This morning, I awoke to the news that my brother, who emigrated to Greece several years before we moved to Australia, and whom I haven't seen for at least 11 years, is going to be in the UK the same time we are.

Happy days.

What makes it even better is that I've already called dibs on my mother's spare room.

Well, not so much to-day, but I spent yesterday wandering around Castro Marim & Vila Real de Santo Antonio, something that’s difficult later in the year with the influx of tourists. In case anyone’s not visited, it’s a great way to spend a sunny day (20C) on relatively quiet roads. Both towns abut the Rio Guadiana and come under the Municipio de Castro Marim. Eastern Algarve being less tourist-developed then Central or the West gives one time to stop and absorb local culture.
Castro Marim is dominated by 2 fortresses across its hills – The first Forte Sao Sebastio isn’t open to the public, but the 2nd castelo, dates from medieval times and is well worth the effort. The crest gives a panoramic view of the low lying salt pans which are still used, and the wildlife reserve. I think it’s now a world heritage site??? There’s an information centre with relief map and commentary, cafe (good coffee & cakes!!!) and lovely landscaped gardens Take some good walking shoes. Away from the castles I was amazed to find the central areas crammed-full with parked-up RV’s and motor-homes. Yes, the Euro-Snow-Birds are even here to roost. No sense in being sniffy about it, the trade to local businesses is extremely important.
Vila Real was relatively quiet but again gives the chance to slowly explore. Some cafes & restaurants had closed up, or are being renovated, but the central square was busy having just dismantled the Christmas nativity display, which was a major hit this year, drawing in a lot of visitors. The marina was full-up and along the tow path all spare parking spaces, and the allocated parking for RV’s and motor-homes with full. I walked around playing a little ID-the-national-plate-game..… Netherlands, Belgium (lots of those), Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, and the largest contingent of all, France. The French take RV’ing very, very, seriously with separate trailers for bikes & smart-cars, solar panels, high-spec TV & internet and enclosed awnings. Golly, what is gonna happen when the loser-Brits turn up in their 20 year old caravans…...
Then, as I walked round the back of the largest lot, I did a double-take. A GB plate! (Somebody tell Farage and he’ll shout something inane in Brussels). Old & battered it was, but there was the owner comfortably sitting reading his Telegraph…. (sigh....can’t change ‘em)
Anyway, a great way to spend a day - I’d recommend to anyone who wants time away from the beach.
